A roller comprises a rigid cylindrical sleeve formed of fiber glass which is coated with resin. The outer surface of the sleeve is machined to remove substantially all visible resin therefrom and to expose the fiber glass. The fibers of the fiber glass provide substantially fuzzy surface characteristics on the outer surface of the sleeve. An elastomeric sleeve is molded around the outer surface of the rigid sleeve. Fibers of the fiber glass extend into the elastomeric sleeve and define a zone having an elasticity modulus which is between that of the rigid sleeve and the elastomeric sleeve. The roller is formed by coating fiber glass filaments with resin and winding them upon a rotating mandrel. When a desired thickness of resin coated filaments are on the mandrel, the filaments are cut and the assembly is heated to partially cure the resin while the mandrel is rotated. Following the final curing of the rigid sleeve, it is placed in a lathe where its outer surface is machined to remove free visible resin on its exterior surface and to expose the fiber glass fibers. The exterior of the rigid sleeve is then coated with a bonding agent and an elastomeric sleeve is bonded to its exterior surface.
A rubber-sleeved roller including a tubular sleeve preferably fabricated from a plastic material and formed with a smooth internal surface to fit on the smooth outer peripheral surface of a metal core and having a tubular rubber sleeve formed on the outer peripheral surface of the nonmetallic sleeve with the rubber sleeve finish ground to a smooth outer peripheral surface on the nonmetallic sleeve whereby the tubular sleeve structure may be readily interchangeable with a similar sleeve structure on a metal core.
A textile working unit having a central shaft with raised bosses having fiber drafting cots adapted for mounting on the bosses. The cot has a rigid core and an outer elastomeric working surface, which may be bonded to the core by means of an adhesive.
A guide roll comprising an inside layer made of a fiber-reinforced material which consists essentially of an epoxy resin composition as a matrix and at least one kind of reinforcing fibers selected from the group consisting of carbon fibers, glass fibers, alumina fibers, aramide fibers, polyester fibers and polyethylene fibers, and an outside layer which consists essentially of a fluororesin.
A cutting unit for a mower is supported for rolling over the ground by at least one ground engaging roller. The roller may be grooved over its length to comprise a Wiehle roller. The roller is formed by an ultra high molecular weight plastic roller body that is integrally molded over and around a hollow aluminum tube. The aluminum tube has enlarged diameter knurled ends to help hold the roller body on the tube.
