Abstract
An apparatus for separating particulates, as dust, dirt, sand, snow and the like, from air being directed to an air cleaner of an internal combustion engine. The apparatus has a cylindrical housing surrounding a separation chamber. Located within the housing is a sleeve having a central outlet passage for carrying cleaned air from the chamber. A plurality of circumferentially spaced vanes attach the sleeve to the housing and provide an inlet passage open to the chamber for directing the air and particulates into the chamber. An impeller rotatably mounted on the top wall of the chamber has a plurality of circumferentially spaced blades. The blades are located in a contiguous relationship with respect to a second opening in the housing. Movement of air through the chamber causes the disc to rotate, whereby the blades pump air and particulates out of the second opening. The rotating impeller produces a positive pressure at the point of discharge of the second opening to insure a flow of air carrying the particulates through the discharge opening.

4375386 - Cyclonic entrainment separator for evaporator - Owned by The Badger Company, Inc. (Cambridge, MA)

A vacuum evaporator is provided with an integral cyclonic-type entrainment separator at the top of the evaporator vapor body which comprises a helical spin plate for imparting a centrifugal action to the vapor and entrained liquid rising from the boiling liquid in the flash chamber. Liquid entrainment is deposited on the vertical wall of the evaporator and flows downward countercurrent to vapor flow into a collecting trough, from which it is discharged into a pipe that returns it to the boiling liquid.

4173458 - Air cleaner

A housing, with a freely rotating, actuated impeller, having a peripheral slot-like outlet, a central circular air outlet for attachment to a suction line, and an air inlet intermediate the two outlets in the housing providing direct communication with the impeller, whereby air entering the inlet rotatively actuates the impeller. By proportioning the housing and the rotor, about 90% of the incoming air is cleaned and goes through the central outlet for use, and about l0% of the air with centrifugally separated dirt exhausts through the peripheral outlet.

4197102 - Air pre-cleaner

An air pre-cleaner of the centrifugal type has a cylindrical housing with an annular louvred air entry structure at a first end thereof and coaxial therewith, and has an inner cylinder forming with the housing and the entry structure an annular separation chamber coaxial with, adjacent to, and axially inward of the entry structure. The inner cylinder forms with the housing a short cylindrical transfer chamber coaxial with, adjacent to, and axially outward of the separation chamber. A ring flange is disposed at the inner end of the inner cylinder along the inner ring of the annular separation chamber lying in a plane normal to the axis of the chambers. A dirt discharge slot is disposed in the side wall of the housing with one end of the slot substantially radially outward from the ring flange, the slot extending along a major portion of the axial length of the separation chamber. The ring flange extends radially outward from the inner end of the inner cylinder only a minor portion of the ditance from the inner cylinder to the side wall of the housing.

5549085 - Deflector insert for air filters

An insert device for smoothing air flow from air filters to carburetors. The device is suitable for turning an air stream from an intake air passageway, which is directed inwardly along a plane from a periphery towards a center to a fuel/air mixing chamber having an annular downwardly flowing mixing passageway with a longitudinal axis at the center. The insert device includes a first end adapted to be operably located concentrically with the annular fuel/air passageway, and a second end opposite the first end. The first and second ends have a central axis extending therebetween. The second end has a center and an upper wall extending outwardly therefrom. A peripheral wall of diminishing outside diameter begins at a point spaced outwardly near the center of the second end and extends smoothly to a point of minimum diameter. From the point of minimum diameter, concave shaped subwalls of slightly increasing size extend downward to the first end. In an alternate embodiment, from the point of minimum diameter, a single peripheral wall of increasing diameter extends to and connects with the first end.

6681726 - Intake system for the combustion air of an internal combustion engine in a portable handheld work apparatus - Owned by Andreas Stihl AG & Co. (Waiblingen,DE)

The invention relates to an intake system (1) for the combustion air (2) of an internal combustion engine (3) in a portable handheld work apparatus (4). The intake system (19) includes a filter housing (5) having an air filter (6) for purifying the combustion air (2). The clean space (8) of the air filter (6) is fluidly connected to an outlet opening (10) of the filter housing (5). The outlet opening (10) communicates with a carburetor (7) of the engine (3). A centrifugal-force separator (13) is mounted forward of the air filter (6) for separating large amounts of dust in the inducted combustion air (2). The separator (13) is so positioned ahead of the filter housing (5) that a central core flow (14) of the separator has a lower particle density (15) and is supplied to the filter (6). A tangential flow (16) surrounds the central core flow (14) in the interior of the separator (13). The tangential flow (16) has a great amount of dust or dirt and is conducted away via the suction side (11) of a blower (12), especially of a cooling-air blower (19) of the engine (3) having vanes on the back side thereof.
