Abstract
A plastic closure for containers comprising a top provided with depending inner and outer skirts, said skirts having facing surfaces which non-sealingly contact surfaces of a bottle neck adjacent its edge, said inner skirt merging into an annular radially projecting sealing member surrounding and integral with a concavo-convex closure web, said sealing member engaging a restricted area of the inner surface of the bottle neck. The closure may be removed by use of a cap lifter or the top of the closure may be provided with weakening means which divide the top into an outer and an inner ring, the outer ring being severed from the inner ring in one segment of the top and the top having an unweakened area opposite the severed segment which connects the outer ring to the rest of the closure for lifting the closure from the bottle.

4759457 - Tamper evident and tamper-proof package

A tamper-proof, tamper-edvident package includes a pill, capsule, ingestible or medicant bottle-holding container and a sealing lig thereover. The lid includes a flexible lip with a conical sealing surface surrounding the container and in angular juxtaposition upon assembly with a more rigid conical sealing surface on the container. A vacuum is drawn in a fixture holding the container and lid by evacuation of air. Upon subsequent exposure of the container/lid exteriors to ambient environmental air the flexible lip is snapped tight by differential pressure (higher on the exterior of the package) so that the lip sealing surface which was at an angle to the container seal surface, is in parallelism with the container seal surface resulting in a wide sealing band which is not breakable by normal hand pulling or twisting. If the interior vacuum is broken by prying the seal apart or by inserting a hypodermic needle to adulterate the contents, the user when purchasing the package can easily ascertain tampering due to the ease with which the container and lid parts can be taken apart.

3976215 - Easy-open, tamper-indicating closure - Owned by Owens-Illinois, Inc. (Toledo, OH)

This disclosure relates to a tamper-indicating press-on, pull-off closure for maintaning pressure in a container whereby the closure and container provide a package which may be readily opened by a consumer without the use of tools and without the creation of dangerous sharp edges. This closure includes a cap and a unique cap liner which fits within the cap and is formed integral with a pull ring for removal of the cap from a container. A plurality of severable tamper-indicating webs are formed between the pull ring and the cap liner and sever upon actuation of the ring pull to indicate tampering with the package. The cap incorporates a plurality of scores in its skirt portion which fracture when the pull ring is actuated to thereby release the cap from engagement with the container.

5385277 - Carbonated beverage bottle handle, pour and storage device - Owned by Innovative Consumer Products, Inc. (Highland Park, IL)

A carbonated beverage bottle handle, pour and storage device comprises bottle top, flapper, handle and actuator portions. The bottle top portion defines a spout screwed to a bottle. The handle portion is fixed to the bottle top portion, and is gripped for holding a bottle. The actuator portion is squeezable toward the handle portion. The flapper portion is joined to the actuator portion and positioned over the spout to be lifted to and from the bottle top portion, to allow liquid to be poured. A stopper is attached to the flapper portion such that lifting the flapper portion lifts the stopper, opening the top of the attached bottle. A screw-threaded, segmented collar welded in the bottle top portion forms female threads for screwing to the bottle. The stopper includes a dome and an annular outer wall, and defines an interior within the annular outer wall. The dome and all of the stopper are formed of material which is flexible in the range of pressures exerted by carbonated beverages. The dome is integrated into the outer wall. As a result of composition and configuration, the dome flexes under action of beverage pressure, exerting outward pressure on the stopper outer wall. The outer wall has a clearance fit within the top of an attached bottle. Under action of outward pressure on the outer wall, exerted by the dome under pressure of a beverage, the outer wall increases the effectiveness of the stopper within the top of the beverage bottle.

5033633 - Plastic closure with safety button and method of forming same - Owned by Continental White Cap, Inc. (Norwalk, CT)

This relates to the formation of a vacuum indicating button in a molded plastic closure. The button is formed by cold working which results in the flow of plastic material from a central portion of the end panel towards the center of the central portion and the automatic formation of an upwardly projecting generally curved button. In all forms the button is formed by cold working of the plastic. The button may be formed by coining between two opposed tools, or the button may be formed by cold working only the top side of the central portion of the end panel by such methods as including spinning, mechanical peening and shot peening. In the case of coining, the button may be formed either by a single annular ring of cold worked, oriented, reduced thickness material or by a plurality of such rings.

5251770 - Container and pressure sealing closure combination - Owned by Broadway Companies, Inc. (Dayton, OH)

A container and pressure sealing closure combination in which the closure includes a rim portion engaging the mouth of the container, a substantially rigid central portion and an annular toggle portion pivotally connected to and interconnecting the rim portion and central portion, whereby upward movement of the central portion in response to internal pressure of the contents of the container pivots the toggle portion to urge the rim portion substantially radially outwardly against the mouth, thereby effecting a seal. In a preferred embodiment, the inner surface of the container mouth includes a plurality of axially-extending channels for conducting pressurized gaseous contents of the container between the closure and the container to the ambient. The outer surface of the mouth includes an annular recess which receives a plurality of radially inwardly projecting ribs on the rim portion, thereby effecting engagement between the closure and container. The closure includes a tab which is pivoted upwardly to remove the closure from the container, and the rim portion includes a plurality of sets of radially extending slots which fracture when the tab is pivoted upward, thereby preventing reattachment of the closure. Also in the preferred embodiment, the container includes an annular base shaped to receive the closure.
