3862522 - Needled scouring pad - Owned by Fiber Bond Corporation (Chicago, IL)

A composite scouring pad is prepared comprising a non-woven layer and a flexible foam layer in juxtaposition to each other, the flexible foam being needled to the non-woven layer by fibers from the non-woven layer which pass through the foam layer and emerge from its opposite side. The opposite side of the foam layer is coated with a resinous layer which anchors the emergent fibers thereon, the fibers providing a desired roughness to said side, making said side suitable as a scouring surface. The non-woven layer is impregnated with a resin and, in the preferred embodiment, with abrasive particles to provide a second scouring surface.

5712210 - Nonwoven abrasive material roll - Owned by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (St. Paul, MN)

A longitudinally extending web of lofty nonwoven abrasive surface treatment material is provided in a coreless roll form to the end user. Successive wraps of the nonwoven abrasive material have interengaging surfaces sufficient to maintain the material in a spirally wrapped configuration yet being readily separable. A plurality of longitudinally spaced and laterally disposed perforations through the web permit the user to successively separate the web into a plurality of sheets of abrasive surface treatment material. In a preferred embodiment, the roll is encased in a protective shrink wrap sheath, and each sheet is separated from the roll by separating said sheet from an innermost wrap of the roll.

5567197 - Apparatus for sanding and buffing with a rotating roller

A soft sanding roller apparatus is provided with a soft compressible sanding sleeve and roller that allows a wide flat to form on the side of the sanding sleeve being pushed against a substrate, such as a piece of wood. The preferred sleeve is backed by a soft deformable layer, such as a soft foam layer, which allows the sanding sleeve to conform to the surface of the substrate without chattering or digging into the substrate. The sleeve has a bore diameter smaller than the uncompressed diameter of the soft foam layer so that the foam layer exerts an even force on the cylindrical sleeve to retain its cylindrical shape. The sleeve is driven by a connection such as a one-way clutch between the sanding sleeve and the foam layer on the roller. The roller is rotated in one direction by a motor to do sanding with the one-way clutch driving the sleeve. The sleeve is removed by turning it in a direction opposite to the sanding direction and pulling it axially against the force from the compressed foam layer.

4331453 - Abrasive article - Owned by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (St. Paul, MN)

Delamination-resistant abrasive belts and discs suitable for offhand and automated article finishing comprise a lofty, non-woven, three-dimensional abrasive web adhesively bonded to a stretch-resistant woven fabric with a polyurethane binder comprising the reaction product of poly-1,4 oxybutylene) glycol diisocyanate having a molecular weight of about 500-4000 and a reactive compound capable of reacting with the isocyanate radicals. The reactive compound is selected from a group consisting of water, diol, triol, diamine or mixtures thereof.

In another preferred embodiment, the abrasive surface treatment material includes abrasive particles of 1000 grade or finer.
