Abstract
Molten metal is treated by flowing gas through it. The container for the treatment is provided with a fore hearth, with a cover and with means for blowing the gas in fine bubbles into the metal. From the container the treated metal flows into a hopper provided with a cover having means for flushing the hopper with an inert gas.

3901305 - Apparatus for continuous casting of metals - Owned by Institut Po Metaloznanie I Technologia Na Metalite (Sofia,BG) [*] Notice:The portion of the term of this patent subsequent to March 21, 1989 has been disclaimed.

A system for the continuous casting of a molten metal containing gas in solution wherein the molten metal is treated with gas under pressure in a first chamber containing the soluble gas together with an inert gas which may or may not dissolve in the melt, and is delivered to a second chamber and thereafter to a final chamber provided with the continuous-casting mold, the latter two chambers being maintained under super atmospheric pressure by the soluble gas.

4549598 - Process for minimizing foam formation during free falling of molten metal into moulds, launders or other containers - Owned by Noranda Inc. (Pointe-Claire,CA)

A process for minimizing foam formation on the top surface of molten metal during free falling of molten metal, such as molten zinc, into moulds, launders or other containers is disclosed. The process comprises the steps of forming a body of substantially dross-free molten metal, introducing a non-oxidizing gas into the container to form an essentially non-oxidizing atmosphere with respect to the molten metal, free falling the molten metal from the body of molten metal into the container, and maintaining the molten metal during the free falling thereof under an essentially non-oxidizing atmosphere, so as to prevent entrainment of sufficient oxygen into the molten metal by the falling stream to form excessive quantities of bubbles having a tenacious oxidized film and which do not collapse when they float to the surface of the molten metal but rather produce undesirable foam on the surface of molten metal.

5733500 - Molten metal degassing and filtering apparatus - Owned by Phelps Dodge Industries, Inc. (Phoenix, AZ)

Molten metal (e.g., on its way to a continuous casting machine for forming a bar that will be rolled into a rod to be drawn down to wire) is filtered to remove particulate impurities by passing it through at least one and preferably several ceramic filters. In addition, the molten metal is degassed by injecting a flushing gas into the metal through one or more porous plugs in the bottom of the chamber through which the molten metal flows. A partial vacuum column above each porous plug is used to help pull gas up through and out of the metal.
