Abstract
A hitch combination which includes a hitch constituting a part of one vehicle and a coupler constituting a part of another vehicle. The one vehicle includes a first key device which is correlated to a certain characteristic of the vehicle. The other vehicle includes a second key device which is correlated to a certain characteristic of the other vehicle. The key devices of the vehicles have interfering parts which serve to prevent securement of the coupler to the hitch when there is a mismatch of vehicle characteristics. When there is a match of vehicle characteristics, the key devices of the vehicles cooperate so as to permit the securement of the coupler to the hitch.

6270107 - Spring biased trailer hitch system

A spring biased trailer hitch system for providing a secure connection between a hitch receiver and a trailer hitch while permitting some spring biased cushioning to the connection to reduce stress on the connection. The spring biased trailer hitch system includes a slotted hitch receiver, a ball hitch having a longitudinal bore, a connection member extending through the bore in the ball hitch, a spring assembly for biasing the connection member, and a connection securement device for coupling the hitch receiver to the ball hitch such that the spring assembly biases the hitch receiver towards the ball hitch.

4131296 - Self-damping trailer hitch - Owned by Motor Wheel Corporation (Lansing, MI)

A trailer hitch comprising a draw tongue adapted to extend from a trailer, a handle mounted for pivotal movement above the draw tongue, and a cable attached at one end to the handle and extending downwardly through the draw tongue to a hitch coupler which is carried for bodily movement upwardly and downwardly as a function of pivotal motion of the handle. A drawbar adapted to be attached to a towing vehicle is slotted to receive the hitch coupler and recessed to capture the coupler as the latter is moved upwardly by pivotal movement of the handle. A resilient bushing of elastomeric material is captured in compression between the drawbar and the draw tongue resiliently to permit relative movement in all planes and to damp road shock therebetween.

4060331 - Spherical couplings for vehicle towing or kindred purposes - Owned by Societe Paulstra (FR)

A ball-joint coupling comprises a male coupling member and a female coupling member. The male coupling member includes a ball to which a layer of elastomeric material is bonded. A part-spherical cap is received on the ball over said elastomeric layer and is bonded to such layer. The female coupling member has a part-spherical socket to receive the cap. Retaining means are operative between the cap and the female coupling member to prevent relative rotation of the cap in the socket at least in the horizontal plane, so that relative movement between the male and female coupling member results in deformation of the elastomeric layer and consequent damping of the movement.

4802686 - Trailer hitch

A trailer hitch for connecting a trailer to a hitch ball on a towing vehicle. There are two converging sides arranged as a V which has an apex at the hitch ball receiving area. A top plate covers extends over most of the sides. There are a pair of holes in the sides which extend through the hitch ball receiving compartment. A pin with pin lock lever extends through the holes for securing the hitch ball in place.

5620198 - Collar for trailer hitch receiver - Owned by Reese Products, Inc. (Elkhart, IN)

A protective collar for installation on a receiver box and a trailer hitch receiver for a vehicle are disclosed. The trailer hitch receiver includes a central frame member and brackets for mounting the frame member to the vehicle. The receiver box is mounted to the frame member and includes a cavity adapted to receive a hitch bar. A protective collar is mounted to the front face of the receiver box defining an opening to the cavity. The collar comprises a body member including an opening for the passage of a mounting end of the hitch bar. The collar includes four interconnected segments, each segment having a substantially L-shaped cross-section. Accordingly, the body member includes a facing portion covering the front face of the receiver box and a mounting flange projecting around the outer periphery of the receiver box.
