Abstract
The present invention is directed to a method whereby thin metal flakes are deposited on a solid substrate or base. The method consists essentially in providing flakes which are very thin and relatively small and suspending them in a volatile organic liquid. The substrate is then brought into contact with the suspension in order to form a film which contains a certain number of flakes. When the substrate is removed from the suspension and the liquid is allowed to evaporate, the flakes attach themselves to the substrate by inter-molecular attraction.

4655985 - Method for manufacturing decorative panels - Owned by Rambaud; Patrick (Boulogne,FR)

Decorative panels are prepared employing a support of a transparent material having one of its faces dulled to enhance adhesion of a lacquer thereon. The processes also include applying a layer of a volatile liquid carrier containing metal and/or metal oxide particles. Also applied is a lacquer that is not miscible with the volatile liquid carrier. In one of the embodiments, the liquid carrier thrusts back the lacquer forming holes in the lacquer to reach the dulled surface of the support and adhere thereto. In the resultant panel, the particles are visible through the thickness of the transparent support at locations corresponding to the holes in the lacquer.

4287231 - Method of spray-reflectorizing electric lamp envelopes - Owned by Westinghouse Electric Corp. (Pittsburgh, PA)

A selected part of the envelope of a fabricated electric lamp is made light-reflecting by spraying it with a coating composition that contains aluminum flakes of such minute size that they inherently arrange themselves in planar relationship and form a specular film which provides a mirror-like reflector surface as the composition dries. A protective coating of a suitable heat-resistant material, such as silicone plastic, is then sprayed over the reflective film and cured. The protective coating can also contain aluminum particles in order to fill voids that may be left in the thin specular film and to make the latter more opaque.

4116710 - Metallic particulate - Owned by The Dow Chemical Company (Midland, MI)

A method of providing a particulate suitable for use in, for example, coating compositions, such as paints. The described method comprises depositing a metal on a substrate by, for example, electroless or vapor deposition methods. The metal deposit is then removed from substrate to provide a plurality of distinct metal platelets suitable for combination with a carrier and use in a coating composition.
