Abstract
Self-administerable method of treating periodontal disease by providing a dilute aqueous benzalkonium chloride solution, pumping the solution through an orifice to provide a pulsating jet stream that is capable of penetrating directly into the periodontal pockets associated with periodontal disease, and applying the jet stream to diseased gingival tissue and into the periodontal pockets.

4110429 - Antibacterial oral composition - Owned by Colgate-Palmolive Company (New York, NY)

An antibacterial oral composition effective to promote oral hygiene containing an antibacterial antiplaque agent and an additive which reduces staining of dental surfaces without substantially diminishing the antibacterial and antiplaque activity of the agent. Bis-biguanido hexanes, such as chlorhexidine and alexidine, and quaternary ammonium salts, such as benzethonium chloride and cetyl pyridinium chloride are typical examples of antibacterial agents. The antistain additive is a water soluble oligomer of the formula ##STR1## wherein M is a water soluble orally acceptable cation; R.sub.1, r.sub.2, r.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are independently H, methyl or ethyl; Y is at least one hydrophilic member of the group consisting of --COOM.sub.1, --CONH.sub.2, and --CH.sub.2 OH; X is at least one hydrophobic member of the group consisting of --CN, --COOR, --COOR.sub.5 OR, --CONHR, --COONHR.sub.5 COR, and --OOCR; M.sub.1 is H or M; R is C.sub.1-8 alkyl; R.sub.5 is C.sub.1-4 alkylene; a is 0-7; and a+b is about 4-15.

4975271 - Muscosal delivery systems for treatment of periodontal disease - Owned by Vipont Pharmaceutical, Inc. (Fort Collins, CO)

A muscosal delivery system is provided for use in treating periodontal disease. The system is composed of a chemotherapeutic agent dissolved in a skin-penetration enhancer. The solution of chemotherapeutic agent and skin-penetration enhancer is placed into the periodontal pocket where the agent is transported into the surrounding gingival tissue by means of the penetration enhancer.

5236699 - Antiplaque mouth rinse

An antiplaque mouth rinse conducive to oral hygiene. The mouth rinse composition includes a water-alcohol vehicle having dissolved therein two antibacterial agents that coact to promote the delivery of these agents and their retention on the teeth and soft tissue in the dental region of the oral cavity of the user, thereby inhibiting the formation of plaque. One agent, Triclosan, is water-insoluble and noncationic, a solubilizer therefor being included in the composition. The other agent, cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC) is soluble in water and alcohol and is cationic. When the combination of Triclosan and CPC is delivered to the dental region, it is adsorbed and retained thereby to afford enhanced antibacterial activity.
