Abstract
A machine for aligning the side walls of a continuously moving carton disposed in enveloping relationship about a continuously moving group of articles and having an open bottom wall panel and for positioning the bottom wall panel relative to the side walls comprises side registering means movable in synchronism with the carton and articles and provided with registering probes disposed to enter registering apertures formed in each side wall of the carton together with synchronous rotatable bottom registering means arranged to enter a registering aperture formed in a bottom wall panel of the carton to hold that panel in position relative to the carton side walls. Following the desired orientation of the side and bottom walls relative to each other, the bottom wall panel is secured in closed position by suitable locking means.

Apparatus for interlocking a pair of panels which may constitute the end portions of a wrap around carton blank, one of the panels having an edge strip with at least one locking aperture therein and which is foldably joined to an edge of the associated panel, the other panel being formed integrally with the body portion of a locking tab and an anchoring tab being foldably joined to the body portion of the locking tab, the apparatus including an elongated locking beam having a longitudinal locking groove formed in the lower surface thereof, means for moving a carton and its end panels along the beam and with the panels adjacent the groove, a rotatable strip folder arranged to engage and fold the strip into the locking groove so as to move its aperture out of the plane of the associated panel, a rotatable tab folder arranged to engage and fold the anchoring tab out of the plane of the body portion of the locking element, an abutment disposed in the locking groove downstream from the strip folder and tab folder for engaging and folding the anchoring tab into an acute angle relative to the body portion of the locking element, a pair of guides disposed on opposite sides of the beam for moving the panels and adjacent portions of the carton toward each other thereby to cause the locking element to move into the locking aperture and to cause the anchoring tab to engage the locking edge of the locking aperture.

5682985 - Article carrier - Owned by The Mead Corporation (Dayton, OH)

A collapsible basket-type article carrier has end walls joined at the ends of opposing side walls. A portion of the side wall is cut-away to form bands for engaging articles. Riser panels extend inwardly of the end walls. A handle structure extends between the end walls and riser panels. A center cell partition extends from each respective side wall to the handle structure. The corner formed at each intersection of the carton's side and end walls is bevelled. In like manner, the corner formed at each intersection of a band of the center cell and the side wall portion thereof is bevelled. Support tabs join either the riser panels or end walls to the bottom wall of the carrier. The bottom wall of the carrier is bifurcated. Bottles are loadable upwardly through the open bottom of the carrier. In collapsed condition the carrier has a shearable nick members strategically located upon cut lines between the side wall and center cell at the bevelled corner tabs. A blank for forming the carrier contains the elements described above. The support tabs are foldably joined to respective riser panels on one version of the blank. In an alternate version of a blank the support tabs are foldably joined to respective end panels.
