A composition of a vinyldiorganosiloxy endblocked polydimethylsiloxane and a mixture of an organosiloxane having five to 20 silicon atoms per molecule and an average of at least three silicon-bonded hydrogen atoms per molecule and a modified organosiloxane having six to 21 silicon atoms per molecule, an average of at least two silicon-bonded hydrogen atoms per molecule and an average of at least one unit of (RO).sub.3 Si(CH.sub.2)x(CH.sub.3)SiO, (RO).sub.3 Si(CH.sub.2)x(CH.sub.3).sub.2 SiO.sub.0.5 and mixtures thereof where R is methyl, ethyl or ##SPC1## And x is 2 or 3 is curable to an elastomer which has improved umprimed adhesion to substrates, particularly metal substrates.
The invention discloses a method of binding a metal, capable of forming a metal hydride, to a surface. The invention also includes a composition which can be applied to a surface, and which can be repeatedly hydrided and dehydrided. According to the invention, a metal capable of forming a metal hydride is pulverized, mixed with a binder, and coated onto a support. The choice of the binder is an important aspect of the invention. Because of the expansion and contraction of the metal, due to the hydriding and dehydriding, the binder must be quite elastic. The binder must also be permeable to hydrogen, and must be heat stable. Silicone rubbers meet these requirements, and can be used as binders.
A method of coating a substrate with a thin film of a polymer of predetermined porosity comprises depositing the thin film on the substrate from a non-gelled solution comprising at least one hydrolyzable metal alkoxide of a polymeric network forming cation, water, an alcohol compatible with the hydrolysis and the polymerization of the metal alkoxide, and an acid or a base, prior to depositing the film, controlling the structure of the polymer for a given composition of the solution exclusive of the acid or base component and the water component, (a) by adjusting each of the water content, the pH, and the temperature to obtain the desired concentration of alkoxide, and then adjusting the time of standing of the solution prior to lowering the temperature of the solution, and (b) lowering the temperature of the solution after the time of standing to about 15 degrees C. or lower to trap the solution in a state in which, after the depositing step, a coating of the desired porosity will be obtained, and curing the deposited film at a temperature effective for curing whereby there is obtained a thin film of a polymer of a predetermined porosity and corresponding pore size on the substrate.
Composite articles in which silicone rubber is bonded to a solid substrate exhibit improved rubber adhesion when small amounts of diallylphthalate are added to the silicone rubber prior to curing the rubber while in contact with the substrate.
A solventless composition for rendering flexible sheet materials non-adherent to surfaces to which they normally adhere is disclosed. These compositions include a low viscosity vinyl chainstopped polysiloxane or a low viscosity silanol chainstopped polysiloxane with an organohydrogenpolysiloxane and a curing catalyst.
By coating a workpiece with a uniform layer of polyimide containing surfactant upon the nonweld areas, spatter produced in electron beam welding of the workpiece is prevented from adhering to the workpiece surface in the nonweld areas. The polyimide coating is so constituted as to be adherent, heat stable, acid resistant, and chemically removeable. Silicone surfactant is preferred.
