Abrasive members formed with resiliently extensible and compressible preformed synthetic foam body particles compressed and bonded together with flexible bonding material and carrying abrasive grains. The combined void portion of the abrasive member and the solids portion of the foam particles occupies a substantial part of the total volume of the abrasive member, and more than 50% for members capable of conforming to contours. In one method of manufacture free preformed foam particles and abrasive grains are tumbled in the presence of tacky bonding material and the mix is thereafter compressed and cured.
This application is a continuation of application Ser. No. 753,253 filed Aug. 16, 1968, entitled Abrasive Means and Method of Manufacture, now abandoned, which in turn is a continuation in part of application Ser. No. 456,647 filed May 18, 1965, of like title, now abandoned.
A rotary finishing tool, comprising (a) a foamed elastomeric bond where the elastomeric bond has greater than 5% void and contains (i) a medium abrasive grit having a grain size of from about 30 to about 50, and (ii) a fine abrasive grit having a grain size about 70 to about 100. In another embodiment, a rotary finishing tool, comprising (a) a hub adaptable to be power driven, (b) an array of abrasive monofilaments secured to and projecting from the hub, where the abrasive monofilament is a polymeric material which has abrasive grit dispersed throughout, (c) and abrasive grit containing foamed, elastomeric bond, having greater than 5% voids, secured to the hub and encapsulating the array of monofilaments.

A method of producing an abrasive tape by preparing an abrasive paint containing abrasive grains having a grain size of 0.05 to 10 .mu.m and containing air bubbles which, upon coating of a flexible substrate, form an abrasive layer having pores in content of 10 to 60% by volume based on a volume of said abrasive layer.
The grinding media is formed of a concentration of agglomerate free hard particles exceeding 50 percent by weight of the media, wherein the particles are chelated by a dispersing agent, surface treated with a surfactant, mixed with polyether polyol and polyisocyanate plus a catalyst and water and thereafter rapidly cured in a closed mold which has been preheated to a temperature exceeding 50.degree. C. and a pressure of 60 to 120 PSIG. The water reacts during curing to create a polyurea linkage and release CO.sub.2 as a blowing agent. The resulting media has a low elastic modulus with particles retained in a polyurethane-urea binder system. The media composition may also include an inorganic filler such as glass fibers not exceeding 30 percent by weight of the media.
An improved article for preparing critical surfaces, in particular for polishing, comprises means including a surface carrying a polishing abrasive of an average particle size less than 10 microns carried on a polymer matrix which has at least one of the following properties, microporosity, hydrophilicity and weak bonding to the polishing abrasive.
