To drench a calf, a tubular esophageal speculum is inserted through the mouth of the calf into the esophagus. The speculum has a knob on the end which will enter the esophagus, but is larger than the larynx so it will not enter the larynx and it also will not pass the thorasic inlet. With the esophageal speculum safely in the esophagus, a flexible tube in extended from the end of the speculum into the rumen and the fluid pumped therethrough, thus accomplishing the direct rumen drenching process.
A hollow, rigid guide tube has a bend nearer to one end than the opposite end. The bent end of the guide tube is inserted through an animal's mouth and esophagus, and into its stomach. The bent end is pressed against the interior of the animal's stomach by manipulating the opposite end which extends out of the animal's mouth. A needle is pushed through the animal's skin and into the stomach end of the guide tube. A fiber is passed through the needle and into and through the whole guide tube. The fiber then extends from outside the animal's abdomen through the stomach wall, through the esophagus and out the animal's mouth. The guide tube and needle are removed and a gastrostomy tube is fastened to the mouth end of the fiber and is pulled into the stomach sidewall in the conventional manner. The guide tube preferably has an outwardly flared surface at one end and has an annular disk attached near the opposite end of the tube.
An esophagus probe for delivery of treatment doses of material to domestic livestock directly into the animal's esophagus. This enhances an availability of the product to the animal and assures the correct dosage without risk of the animal spitting the dose out of its mouth.
An apparatus and its method of use are provided allowing lavage, sump and enteral feeding operations with only one intubation. The apparatus includes a first tube having two distinct passageways. One of these passageways completely contains a second, feeding tube during intubation. Once the first tube is in place in the patient, the second tube is extended from the first tube so as to enter the stomach. The extension of the second tube opens ports in the first passageway of the first tube, thereby allowing sump or lavage treatment with the second passageway of the first tube serving as an air vent. A constriction in the end of the first passageway engages a band on the proximal end of the second tube to keep the tubes together. Once gastric emptying of the patient resumes, the second tube immediately moves into the duodenum then into the jejunum past the Ligament of Treitz and the first tube is withdrawn from the patient while maintaining the second tube in position for enteral feeding through feeding ports in its distal end.
The present invention comprises a device for oral administration of a fluid source, preferably administration to an individual in need thereof, and methods for use of said device. In one embodiment of the invention, the device is used to administer colostrum to newborn calves, on order to generate higher levels of passive immunity in the calves than may be gained either from natural suckling or bottle feeding of colostrum. The fluid or liquid source according to the invention is preferably selected from the group consisting of milk, artificial milk substitutes, and colostrum. Liquid obtained from a domestic animal, including a bovine species.
