Abstract
A steam polymer separator is provided that includes an upright tubular vessel having an outlet adjacent the bottom thereof, and a transfer screw with a shaft extending through the bottom of the separator. An open cage structure is attached to the top of the screw. In order to accentuate plug flow in the melt pool in the vessel, the cage structure is modified with a centrally positioned bottomless cup attached thereto. The size and shape of the cup are determined by formulae.

4134736 - Steam-polymer separation apparatus - Owned by E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company (Wilmington, DE)

The spiral agitator in a vessel for separating steam from polymer is modified by providing holes in the ribbon flight at locations adjacent to the locations where the ribbon flight is supported by struts for the purpose of allowing the polymer to flow through the holes and sweep the area directly behind the struts to prevent gel buildup in these locations.

5160354 - Process and apparatus for extraction and recovery of blowing agents from polymeric foams - Owned by Du Pont Canada Inc. (Mississauga,CA)

An apparatus and process for removing blowing agent from polymeric foam. The apparatus comprises a comminution zone into which extraction liquid and polymeric foam may be introduced. The upper end of the zone is of larger cross-sectional area and tapers to a lower end of a smaller cross-sectional area. A plurality of blades are located within the comminution zone, and are adapted to comminute the polymeric foam and impart a vortex to the liquid and foam. A quiescent zone is directly connected to the lower end of the comminution zone so that comminuted polymeric foam and extraction liquid may be passed directly from the comminution zone to the quiescent zone. Baffles for attenuating the vortex created in the comminution zone are located within the quiescent zone. The foam then rises to the top of the quiescent zone and is removed.

6652630 - Device for degassing melts - Owned by Starlinger & Co. Gesellschaft m.b.H. (Vienna,AU)

A device for degassing melts, especially plastic melts, which has a melt nozzle (1) with an inlet connection (11) for connecting to a melt supply, a melt outlet opening and a vacuum chamber (20) defined by essentially vacuum-tight walls, which communicates with a vacuum source and which opens into a discharge opening for an essentially vacuum-tight connection to a melt processing system, the melt outlet opening of the nozzle extending into the degassing chamber. The melt outlet opening (13a) of the nozzle (1) is configured as a slit of a length which is a multiple of its width and which has a curved or folded configuration.

5411710 - Apparatus for processing materials - Owned by E. I. DuPont de Nemours and Company (Wilmington, DE)

The present invention relates to an apparatus for processing materials, a process for mixing, finishing and de-volatizing polyamide to make 66 nylon and the 66 nylon made by this process. The apparatus comprises an agitator section having an outlet adjacent the bottom thereof; a transfer screw disposed adjacent the outlet of the agitator section; a spiral ribbon extending upwardly from the transfer screw; a ring disposed vertically above the spiral ribbon, at least one baffle disposed vertically above the spiral ribbon and connected to the ring and a wall-wiping spur connected to the ring. Preferably, the apparatus has two baffles--an upper one for pumping the material downwardly and a lower one for pumping the material upwardly. The diameter of each baffle is preferably about 80% of the diameter of the agitator section.
