An improved silver-zinc battery particularly suited for use in an environment wherein the battery operatively is subjected to multiple charge/discharge cycling over extended periods. The battery is characterized by a plurality of positive plates of a planar configuration having interposed therebetween a plurality of negative plates of a wedge-shaped configuration and a separator system including a highly absorbent material contiguous with the surfaces of the plates and multiple semi-permeable membranes interposed therebetween.
A secondary alkaline system, such as, for example, nickel-zinc, characterized by improved cycle life and superior volumetric energy density is provided in which the negative electrodes comprise a flat central portion with edges which have a greater amount of active material than does the central portion and positive electrodes having a flat central portion of substantially the same size as that of the negative electrode with edges having less active material than the central portion. In the preferred embodiment, the greater amount of active material at the edges is achieved in the negative electrodes by providing flared edges; and the lesser amount in the edges of the positive electrodes is obtained by forming the electrode with tapered edges.
A method of making a cell electrode of a stripe rectangle shape having at least one electrode depolarizing mix layer on a current collector. A thickness of one end portion of the electrode depolarizing mix layer is thicker than an average thickness of the electrode depolarizing mix layer by 2 to 25%. The method comprises sequentially bond adhesive tape pieces to a strip conductive sheet, coating on electrode depolarizing mix solution on the surface of the stripe conductive sheet and peeling off the adhesive tape piece.

An iron-silver battery is made, consisting of at least one positive electrode plate and at least one negative electrode plate housed in a case containing an alkaline electrolyte; where the positive plate comprises a silver supporting plaque containing silver active battery material, the negative plate comprises an expansible, diffusion bonded, metal fiber supporting plaque containing iron oxide active battery material with a sulfur additive, and the plates are separated from each other by a material that is not chemically attacked by the electrolyte or ions contained in the electrolyte. The silver electrode is disposed between and contacts 60% to 90% porous separators and a microporous separator contacts the porous separator forming a multi-ply laminate.
This invention relates to a bipolar battery with self-perpetuating semi-wedge anodes where electric contact is established between the anode of one cell and the cathode of the adjacent cell through the wall which separates the two cells. The self-perpetuating semi-wedge anodes each have a rectangular triangle as a base, and the self-perpetuation of the wedge is effected by dissolving the anode from one side only, the side where the cathode is placed at the appropriate angle.
