Abstract
Housing, particularly for flexible tape measures, is made up of a pair of side members between which the reel carrying the tape or the like is journalled, and a collar member spacing the side members apart, a gap in the collar member forming a mouth. The side members may comprise dished metal discs and surrounding rings of plastics material which rings are secured to the collar member to complete the assembly. Different widths of collar member may be employed to form housings of different sizes.

A reel is composed of a base having therein a recess, a seat formed on a bottom face defining the recess so as to position a rotation disk thereon, an opening defined in a side face defining the recess to communicate with the recess and for oppositely receiving two rollers, and a gap defined to communicate with the opening. The rotation disk has a first disk and a second disk securely connected to the first disk by means of a connection shaft. The second disk has an indent defined in a mediate portion thereof and a channel defined to communicate with both the indent and the opening of the base. The connector of the hose is able to be received in the indent and the hose is able to be wound around the connection shaft.

A retractable rule assembly includes wear resistant structure formed of a wear resistant material. The wear resistant structure is mounted at each lateral side of a blade opening of the rule assembly's housing to substantially protect the plastics material at the lateral sides from wear by the lateral side edges of the blade. An alternative retractable rule assembly has rollers rotatably mounted at each lateral side of the blade opening.
