Abstract
The driving tool for installing fasteners in workpieces includes a motor operated driver, a clutch mechanism engageable with the driver, and an adapter including a wrenching mechanism and which connects to the driving tool and cooperates with the clutch mechanism to effectuate rotation of the wrenching mechanism. The adapter includes means to engage the clutch before the fastener engages the workpiece. The preferred means is a detent assembly which is secured to the main body of the adapter and has a detent ball which cooperates with an annular groove in the wrenching mechanism. The main body or an extension thereof of the adapter engages the workpiece prior to the fastener and as continued force is applied, the clutch mechanism is engaged. Thereafter, the detent overrides the groove permitting the wrenching mechanism and fastener to further advance and the fastener is driven into the workpiece. The adapter is adjustable for different length fasteners.

3973605 - Driving tool barrel assembly - Owned by Textron, Inc. (Providence, RI)

A barrel assembly for a fastener driving tool includes an outer sleeve adapted for connection to the driving tool, an inner sleeve retractably attached within the outer sleeve and a barrel pivotally and retractably connected to the inner sleeve. A breech collar is positioned in the inner sleeve and matingly engages the barrel end. Guide fingers extend through the barrel wall into the bore to position and guide the fasteners placed therein. The fasteners are inserted into the barrel bore by pivotally opening the barrel and exposing the barrel bore at the connected end of the barrel.

4030383 - Nose piece for screwguns

An attachment for a screwgun for driving screws to a predetermined depth. The device consists of a base member formed with threads for threadable attachment to the head of a screwgun a sleeve formed with threads for threadable attachment to the base member and a spring attached to the base and bearing against the sleeve for holding the sleeve in a preselected position.

4236555 - Stand-up screwgun - Owned by Illinois Tool Works Inc. (Chicago, IL)

An attachment for a screwgun is provided which has the capability of handling screw lengths of up to eight inches. The nosepiece is made collapsible to bring the head of the fastener into engagement with the driver. The nosepiece is made removable to facilitate replacement with a shorter nosepiece for feeding smaller fasteners, easy clearing of jams and replacement of the driver bit. The slide collar which moves with the drive rod may be locked in the collapsed position so that the driver bit may be changed without disassembling the attachment or removing it from the power tool.

4630512 - Adjustable motor-operated screw driving device - Owned by Hilti Aktiengesellschaft

In a motor-driven screw driving device, a drive unit and a drive member are located within a housing and are interconnected by a torque-limiting coupling. The coupling is adjustable by changing the force applied to a spring element. The spring element is supported within a stop sleeve located within the housing and the stop sleeve is axially displaceable relative to the housing. A depth stop on the drive spindle is adjustable relative to the stop sleeve. An actuating sleeve accessible on the exterior of the screw driving device affords the adjustment of the stop sleeve and the depth stop. A connecting element is secured to the actuating sleeve and is in engagement with the depth stop so that the actuating sleeve and depth stop can be rotated as a unit. The connecting element is selectively engageable with the stop sleeve so that the actuating sleeve and stop sleeve can be rotated as a unit for adjusting the torque-limiting coupling.

4302991 - Fastener plunging apparatus

Apparatus is provided for plunging a fastener through a soft material preparatory to insertion of the fastener in a hard backing. The apparatus may be embodied as an attachment for a conventional fastener feed apparatus or as an improved form of feed apparatus itself. The improvement includes two telescoping members biased to a normal fully extended position. The members are engageable end-to-end with conventional telescoping elements of the feed apparatus and are axially movable with them. The force biasing the members apart is set so as to be substantially less than the force biasing the conventional elements to a fully extended position so that the fastener will be plunged through the soft material first upon application of a force, and then subsequently inserted into the backing upon application of additional force. Apparatus is provided for limiting the collapsed length of the members so as to control the depth of the plunge.
