Circuits are disclosed for processing color encoded video signals, encoded per a format wherein a chrominance signal in the form of a modulated subcarrier is buried in spectrum "troughs" in the midband of a wider band luminance signal, an illustrative use of the encoding format being in video disc recording. The processing circuits serve, in use with composite signals developed during video disc playback, to convert an input composite signal of buried subcarrier format to an output composite signal of NTSC format. Comb filtering is employed to separate buried subcarrier chrominance signal from midband luminance signal components. A heterodyning step preceding comb filtering is performed in a manner substantially precluding "jitter" of played back signals from disturbing accuracy of comb filter separating action, enabling use of a single 1H delay line form for the comb filter and enabling use of a relatively inexpensive, narrowband structure for the single delay line. The comb filter output provides a chrominance signal in a band suitable for output composite signal use. The output chrominance signal is also used in a subtractive process to effect comb filtering of the luminance signal to remove therefrom midband chrominance signals.

Carrier waves are amplitude modulated in accordance with composite signals developed during video disc playback, and applied to the input of a 1H delay line. Subtractive combination of the modulated carrier waves from both input and output of the delay line effects a first comb filtering action to develop a chrominance signal output in the highband location desired for output use. The delay line output is applied to an amplitude detector. The detected signal is additively combined with the input composite signal to effect a second comb filtering action, developing a luminance signal output free of chrominance components and also lacking vertical detail components. A phase inverted version of the detected signal is also additively combined with the input composite signal to effect a third comb filtering action, and the sum is low pass filtered to provide a vertical detail signal. Combining of the products of the three comb filters provides the output composite signal. The output of the amplitude detector is also used as a substitution signal input to the carrier wave modulator under defect pickup conditions.
An information signal recording system separates a color video signal into a luminance signal and a carrier chrominance signal. The frequency of the separated carrier chrominance signal is converted to a lower frequency band. A carrier is frequency modulated with at least one audio signal which is mixed with the separated luminance signal and the frequency converted carrier chrominance signal. A carrier is frequency modulated with the mixed signals, and recorded as a main information signal on a main information signal track of a recording medium. A system for reproducing the recording medium reproduces the recorded main information signal from the recording medium. The reproduced main information signal is frequency demodulated, and the resulting output signal is separated into the luminance signal and the frequency converted carrier chrominance signal. The converted carrier chrominance signal is returned to the original frequency and mixed with the separated luminance signal to produce a reproduced color video signal. The frequency modulated audio signal is separated from the frequency demodulated main information signal. The separated frequency modulated audio signal is then demodulated.
Apparatus for use in playback of a color picture/sound disc record includes a stylus having a groove bottom engaging tip, with a conductive electrode having an exposed edge with an effective dimension along the groove which does not exceed the longitudinal dimension of the narrowest depressed groove bottom region of the disc; means for rotating the disc to cause variations in the capacitance exhibited between the stylus electrode and the disc's conductive layer; detection means responsive to the capacitive variations for deriving a train of impulses having a repetition rate varying in accordance with a first FM carrier, bearing modulation representative of luminance and chrominance information, and a duty cycle varying in accordance with a second FM carrier, bearing modulation representative of sound information; means for amplifying the impulse train; first filter means coupled to the amplifier output for selectively passing the first FM carrier and sidebands to a first FM demodulator to effect recovery of (a) the luminance and chrominance signals; and second filter means coupled to the amplifier output for selectively passing the second FM carrier and sidebands to a second FM demodulator to recover (b) the audio signals.
A reproducing apparatus for reproducing a video signal from a recording medium having color signal and luminance signal separated from a composite color television signal recorded thereon, which includes means for applying the reproduced luminance signal to a comb filter in order to remove the color information which leaked into the luminance signal when recording, and means for compensating the deterioration of the reproduced luminance signal resulting from said comb filter.
An improved color corrector is disclosed which is of the type that separates the color burst component from a color video signal and uses the color burst in a phase locked loop to generate a continuous color subcarrier signal that is used to provide frequency and phase error correction of the chroma component of the color video signal. The corrector uses a wide bandwidth phase locked loop and has means for adding a color corrected chroma component from a present horizontal line of the video signal to a color corrected chroma component delayed by one horizontal line to cancel other circuit induced phase errors that are present due to the use of the wide bandwidth phase locked loop and the gating of the color burst thereto using a horizontal sync related burst gate signal.
