Ultraviolet light absorbers for plastics (for example polyolefins, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene; polyvinylchloride; or a nitro lacquer), which may be incorporated with or without one or more other known ultraviolet light stabilizers into the plastics, have the formula I ##SPC1## in which each of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 represents H, Cl, Br, --C.sub.n H.sub.2n.sub.+1, --C.sub.n H.sub.2n.sub.-1 or --O--C.sub.n H.sub.2n.sub.+1 or an --O--aryl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl radical with up to eight carbon atoms, m represents a whole number from 1 to 8 inclusive, and n represents a whole number from 1 to 4 inclusive, with the proviso that the radicals R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7 and R.sub.8, within their definition, may be similar or dissimilar and n need not necessarily have the same value in all of the radicals where n occurs, And the formula Ia ##SPC2## Wherein each of R.sub.1 ' to R.sub.10 ', independently of one another, is selected from H, alkyl, aralkyl, alkaryl, alkyl--(OC.sub.2 H.sub.4).sub.n .sub.', alkyl-(OC.sub.3 H.sub.6).sub.n .sub.', Cl, Br, OH, O-alkyl, O-aryl, S-alkyl, S-aryl, COO-alkyl, COO-aryl, CONH-alkyl, CONH-aryl, NHCO-alkyl, NHCO-aryl, alkyl ether radicals and alkyl thioether radicals, with the proviso that at least one of the radicals R'.sub.1 to R'.sub.10 must be such that at least one --C--S--C-- grouping is present in the compound, and n' represents a whole number of from 1 to 12 inclusive.
This application is a continuation-in-part of our copending applications, Ser. No. 170,660, filed Aug. 10, 1971, now U.S. Pat. No. 3,808,273, and Ser. No. 808,041, filed Mar. 12, 1969; and now abandoned, said Ser. No. 808,041 being, itself, a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 799,898, filed Feb. 17, 1969, and now abandoned.

Topically applicable sunscreen/cosmetic compositions well suited for enhanced photoprotection of human skin and/or hair against the damaging effects of UV-A and UV-B irradiation, particularly solar radiation, comprise a photoprotecting effective amount of a novel oxanilido-substituted polyorganosiloxane/polyorganosilane having one of the formulae (1) to (3): ##STR1## wherein A is a monovalent oxanilide radical which comprises an alkylene or alkyleneoxy bridging group, which is bonded directly to a silicon atom, and which has the formula (4): ##STR2##
The invention concerns specific new oxalic acid diarylamides which are characterized by an asymmetrical substitution with regard to the central oxalic amide moiety of the formula and by substitution with one or two alkoxy, alkenyloxy, aralkenyloxy or acyloxy groups. Definite additional substituents may be present. The compounds are valuable ultraviolet stabilizers.
The compounds are esters and amides of trialkylhydroxyphenylalkanoic acid having the formula ##STR1## wherein R, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently lower alkyl or cycloalkyl groups, R.sup.3 is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkylene, phenyl, phenyl substituted by alkyl groups, alkylthioethyl, thiobis-alkylene, alkyleneoxyalkylene, polyoxyalkylene or a polyvalent cyclic or acyclic hydrocarbon radical, R.sup.4 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, R.sup.5 is hydrogen, alkyl, phenyl, phenyl substituted with alkyl groups, alkylene, polyoxyalkylene or polyvalent cyclic or acyclic hydrocarbon radical, A is lower alkylene, m is 1 to 4 and n is 1 to 6. The compounds are useful as stabilizers for organic materials, especially polyolefins, which deteriorate upon exposure to light and heat.
The invention relates to compounds of formula ##STR1## wherein the variables have the meanings given in the claims. The compounds are suitable for use as UV absorbers for the photochemical stabilisation of undyed, dyed or printed textile fiber materials and for enhancing the sun protection factor thereof.
