A metal can body is formed with a longitudinally extending lap side seam which is securely bonded with a nylon type high strength organic adhesive. In order to provide a strong permanent bond in the side seam, the body is precoated with an epoxy type coating which adheres tenaciously to both the adhesive and to the metallic body surfaces.
This application is a division of co-pending application Ser. No. 202,096 filed Nov. 26, 1971, now U.S. Pat. No. 3,773,589 which was in turn a continuation of application Ser. No. 830,918 filed May 22, 1969, now abandoned, which was in turn a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 491,211, filed Sept. 29, 1965, now abandoned.
The invention relates to a paint and/or a coating composition comprising anti-corrosive composition comprises at least one oxyaminophosphate pigment and at least one oxynitrite, oxymetalphosphate, oxyborate or oxysilicate. A method for the oxyaminophosphate pigment is provided.
Heat-sealable laminates useful as packaging materials, for example, for the packaging of photographic processing chemicals, are comprised of a metal foil, a thermoplastic polymeric film, and an interlayer formed by radiation curing of a composition comprising an acrylated epoxy resin. The laminates are manufactured by a process which comprises forming a sandwich comprising a layer of metal foil, a layer of thermoplastic polymer and an interlayer formed from a composition comprising an acrylated epoxy resin and irradiating the interlayer through the layer of thermoplastic polymer, for example by the use of ultraviolet radiation or high energy ionizing radiation, to cure the interlayer and bond it to both the layer of metal foil and the layer of thermoplastic polymer.
An adhesive composition for bonding polished metal surfaces to vinyl chloride polymer coated metal substrates is disclosed which is comprised of a thermoplastic vinyl chloride polymer resin, a thermosetting epoxy resin normally incompatible with the vinyl chloride polymer resin and an amount of an acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene copolymer which imparts compatibility between the epoxy resin and the vinyl chloride polymer.
In a metal container having at least one seam by which two overlapping metal edges are joined together, at least one of the edges (58) has a resilient polymeric layer (56) bonded firmly to the metal, so that when that edge (58) is seamed to a second edge (60) the polymeric layer deforms without destroying the bond, and becomes bonded to the second edge, so creating a seal against leakage. A layer of latex no greater than 0.10 mm thick may optionally be included. Seams to which the invention is applicable include swaged seams, interlocked double seams or longitudinal side seams. In the latter case the polymeric layer may provide the bond to secure a single lap seam.
A lapped seam can having a high safety characteristic used as containers of soft drinks or beer wherein the cut-burrs at the end of the inner end portion of the can blank are completely removed so that micro-leak passages apt to occur in the lapped seam can are shut off, thereby permitting a long term storage of the can content without deterioration by preventing metal from being dissolved out from said inner end portion.
