Abstract
A diffuser for centrifugal compressors includes a first plurality of passages therein, curved to receive expanding vortical flow from the impeller and having an inlet configuration to each of the first plurality of passages for accepting supersonic flow from a radial flow impeller and including a second plurality of passages located aft of throat regions in each of the first plurality of passages to produce an increased diffuser exit area in a subsonic flow region downstream of each of the throats of the first plurality of passages to improve subsonic diffuser pressure recovery.

4576550 - Diffuser for a centrifugal compressor - Owned by General Electric Company (Lynn, MA)

The diffuser of the present invention comprises a plurality of passages which intersect at radially inner ends thereof to define a quasi-vaneless annular inlet for receiving accelerated gases from an impeller of a centrifugal compressor. Each of the passages includes a throat portion having a quadrilateral cross section, including two subtantially parallel linear sidewalls and two substantially arcuate opposing sidewalls, effective for reducing the length of and thereby pressure losses from the annular inlet. The linearity and regularity of the diffuser passages enables the diffuser to be manufactured to close tolerances by electric discharge milling an annular plate utilizing a single tool. This assures uniformity and consistency between diffusers.

4859145 - Compressor with supercritical diffuser - Owned by Sundstrand Corporation (Rockford, IL)

Losses in a diffuser 26 for a radial discharge compressor including an impeller 10 with impeller blades 16 terminating in radially outer discharge ends 18 are minimized by means of first and second stages of diffuser vanes 30 and 32, which vanes 30 and 32 have cross sectional shapes configured as supercritical airfoils.

7293955 - Supersonic gas compressor - Owned by Ramgen Power Systrms, Inc. (Bellevue, WA)

A gas compressor based on the use of a driven rotor having a compression ramp traveling at a local supersonic inlet velocity (based on the combination of inlet gas velocity and tangential speed of the ramp) which compresses inlet gas against a stationary sidewall. In using this method to compress inlet gas, the supersonic compressor efficiently achieves high compression ratios while utilizing a compact, stabilized gasdynamic flow path. Operated at supersonic speeds, the inlet stabilizes an oblique/normal shock system in the gasdyanamic flow path formed between the rim of the rotor, the strakes, and a stationary external housing. Part load efficiency is enhanced by the use of a pre-swirl compressor, and using a bypass stream to bleed a portion of the intermediate pressure gas after passing through the pre-swirl compressor back to the inlet of the pre-swirl compressor. Inlet guide vanes to the compression ramp enhance overall efficiency.

7334990 - Supersonic compressor - Owned by Ramgen Power Systems, Inc. (Bellevue, WA)

A gas compressor based on the use of a driven rotor having an axially oriented compression ramp traveling at a local supersonic inlet velocity (based on the combination of inlet gas velocity and tangential speed of the ramp) which forms a supersonic shockwave axially, between adjacent strakes. In using this method to compress inlet gas, the supersonic compressor efficiently achieves high compression ratios while utilizing a compact, stabilized gasdynamic flow path. Operated at supersonic speeds, the inlet stabilizes an oblique/normal shock system in the gasdyanamic flow path formed between the gas compression ramp on a strake, the shock capture lip on the adjacent strake, and captures the resultant pressure within the stationary external housing while providing a diffuser downstream of the compression ramp.

7434400 - Gas turbine power plant with supersonic shock compression ramps

A gas turbine engine. The engine is based on the use of a gas turbine driven rotor having a compression ramp traveling at a local supersonic inlet velocity (based on the combination of inlet gas velocity and tangential speed of the ramp) which compresses inlet gas against a stationary sidewall. The supersonic compressor efficiently achieves high compression ratios while utilizing a compact, stabilized gasdynamic flow path. Operated at supersonic speeds, the inlet stabilizes an oblique/normal shock system in the gasdynamic flow path formed between the rim of the rotor, the strakes, and a stationary external housing. Part load efficiency is enhanced by use of a lean pre-mix system, a pre-swirl compressor, and a bypass stream to bleed a portion of the gas after passing through the pre-swirl compressor to the combustion gas outlet. Use of a stationary low NOx combustor provides excellent emissions results.
