Abstract
This automatic machine is intended for machining workpieces in order to reduce their want-of-balance, notably in the case of small or medium series of rotary parts. This machine, adapted to balance dynamically these parts, comprises a measuring station and a plurality of machining stations disposed on a common circle, and a central rotary device having a vertical axis and disposed centrally of said stations for transferring simultaneously all the parts from one station to the next station in the same direction of rotation.

4575288 - Method of and apparatus for working a profiled steel workpiece

An apparatus for working a elongated angle-iron workpiece having a pair of nonparallel flanges at least one of which is to be drilled has a transport unit for displacing the workpiece longitudinally through a working station and a support in the station for holding the workpiece with the one flange forming an acute angle with the horizontal. A drilling unit including a drilling tool can move horizontally in the station transverse to the workpiece and transverse to the workpiece and at the acute angle to the horizontal perpendicularly through the one flange. To obtain a given displacement along the workpiece flange, the carriage supporting the drill unit is moved horizontally through a horizontal distance equal to the desired displacement times the secant of the angle that the flange forms with the horizontal. The drilling tool can be moved perpendicularly of the one flange during displacement of the carriage through the horizontal distance through a distance equal to the predetermined distance multiplied by the tangent of the acute angle the one flange forms with the horizontal so the drilling tool does not change spacing from the one flange during horizontal adjustment.

4790697 - Automatic grinder - Owned by Hines Industries, Inc. (Ann Arbor, MI)

A method and apparatus for the automatic balancing of workpiece having diverse surface geometry is disclosed. The balancing machine of the present invention provides for computer numerical controls in the balancing and material removal operations. The processes provide for alternative methods of material removal and further provides for the balancing operation to be self-calibrating and self-programming.

5992232 - Dynamic balance adjusting apparatus - Owned by Asahi Kogaku Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha (Tokyo,JP)

An automatic dynamic balance adjusting apparatus is provided that adjusts the dynamic balance of a rotating body on a workpiece. The dynamic balance adjusting apparatus includes a control unit, a turntable for carrying the workpiece along a predetermined path, and a plurality of stations, arranged along the path, at which processes are performed on the workpiece. The stations include a measurement station at which the dynamic balance of the rotating body is determined, a dispenser station at which the application of a balance-weight agent is performed to adjust the dynamic balance of the rotating body, and an inspection station at which the dynamic balance of the rotating body is checked. In particular, the dynamic balance of the rotating body may be measured and checked after the rotating body has been mounted on a sub-assembly or the like by utilizing a holder, on which the workpiece is securely mounted, that is resiliently supported on the turntable and is provided with at least one acceleration sensor to provide data used in determining the dynamic balance of the rotating body.

4884210 - Method and machine for a balancing centering of workpieces which are to be machined only at certain portions, particularly crankshafts - Owned by GFM Gesellschaft fur Fertigungstechnik und Maschinenbau Gesellschaft (Steyr,AT)

In a method and machine for balancing centering a workpiece, such as a crankshaft, to be machined only at certain portions and in which the workpiece is transversely displaced with respect to an axis of rotation so as to minimize any unbalance and is subsequently cut to length, after which centering bores are formed in the opposite end faces of the workpiece to define the axis of rotation, the final balancing after the finishing machining of the workpiece is optimized by pre-balancing the workpiece in a manner which takes into account only the unbalance of those workpiece portions which will not be machined to determine the extent and direction of the transverse displacement.
