In a lead acid or the like storage battery having a case and a plurality of cells with each cell having positive and negative plates. A first cell connector strap connects negative plates of one cell to the positive plates of an adjacent cell successively and terminates in a positive terminal connector upon the interior of the case. A second cell connector strap connects the positive plates of one cell with the negative plates of an adjacent cell successively and terminates in a negative terminal connector upon the interior of the case which has an apertured closure base. A platform is mountable upon a vehicle or other support and includes a pair of projecting terminal connectors adapted to be received and projected up into said case for respective connection with the positive and negative terminal connectors respectively. Mounted upon the platform is a connector adapted for connection to a ground and to a powerline respectively. A pair of conductors respectively interconnect the platform terminal connectors and said connector. The terminal connectors are so arranged and spaced relative to the battery connectors that upon mounting of the battery upon the platform, the platform connectors project up into and register within the battery connectors.
The power head assembly for a cordless electric lawnmower has a removable upper housing that includes two spaced batteries, and a lower housing that is mounted to the deck of the grass cutting device. The upper housing has a handle, and at least one quick disconnect terminal that engages a mating quick disconnect terminal affixed to the lower housing. The lower housing includes an electric motor that is disposed between the two batteries when the upper housing is in place. A portion of the electric motor is located below the deck to further reduce the overall height of the device. The lower housing is mounted to the deck by several bolts which are placed in the same mounting pattern used to mount gasoline engines to a deck, so that the same decks may be used for both the cordless electric and gasoline-powered lawnmowers.
A battery system includes a battery with a pair of terminals extending from one side of the battery case, and a tray-like battery holder. The terminals have hollow sockets inserted therein which are engaged by posts extending from conductive plugs that extend through an end wall of the holder. A threaded connection is formed in the plug and opens to the outside of the holder. Alignment posts are formed in the holder to be disposed within cylindrical wells in the bottom of the battery case and ensure proper alignment of the battery in the holder. A hinged latch is formed in the holder and engages a projection on the battery case. When in place in the holder, the battery case rests on resilient pads located on a floor of the holder.
Disclosed is a battery system in which a battery is provided with a pair of quick connect electrical contact mechanisms. A battery tray, for receiving the battery, is also provided with a pair of quick connect electrical contact mechanisms which are adapted to connect and establish electrical continuity with the battery quick connect mechanisms. The battery pin assemblies may be molded into the battery cover and may be welded to the existing positives and negative battery posts. In this manner, the provision of the pins requires no additional penetrations of the battery container, thus reducing the potential for leakage of electrolyte from the container. The pins may be nested within indentations provided in the container. In this manner, the provision of the pins adds only minimally to the overall dimensions of the battery, thus resulting in a compact design. In the case of a spirally wound cell battery, the pins may be nested within the indentation formed between two of the battery cells and may be located either on the ends or the sides of the battery. Alternatively, in a spirally wound cell battery, the pins may be located in openings formed between four cells in the interior of the battery.
A sealed, lead-acid cell tray assembly for powering a vehicle characterized by the ability to provide vastly superior cycle life under regimes requiring relatively deep depths of discharge comprises a tray base, upstanding tray side walls connected to the base, the base and the side walls being dimensionally configured to provide a cell enclosure area having the ability to accept at least six sealed lead-acid cells in a horizontal position, cell-receiving members positioned above the base and attached to the upstanding side walls which divide at least part of the cell enclosure area into cell compartments capable of accepting at least one sealed lead-acid cell in a horizontal position and tray covers which limit access to the cells.
A sealed lead-acid battery assembly for motive power vehicles is provided for. The battery tray assembly comprises a battery tray having a tray base adapted to support one or more sealed lead-acid batteries. The battery tray has three upstanding tray walls, consisting of two side walls and a front wall, which are connected to the tray base, a tray top connected to the upstanding tray walls, and one or more divider walls. The tray base, side walls, front wall, tray top, and divider wall define one or more compartments adapted to receive batteries and a compartment adapted to receive a battery charger. The battery tray has a generally open back which provides access for loading batteries into the battery compartments and for loading a charger into the charger compartment. Otherwise, the battery and charger compartments are substantially enclosed by the battery tray. The battery tray assembly further comprises a battery charger mounted in the charger compartment, and two or more sealed lead-acid batteries supported in the battery compartments. The batteries are electrically connected together to provide positive and negative termination.
