Abstract
A catalyst prepared by (1) forming a mixture of a finely divided support such as silica, alumina, zirconia or thoria and a chromium compound which may be either organic or inorganic followed by (2) adding a titanium compound, then (3) heat activating the reaction product of (2), and then (4) further heating in a gas that comprises oxygen. The disclosure also includes a method of polymerizing olefins with this catalyst and the process of preparing the catalyst.

4711869 - Silica-titania hydrocarbon conversion catalyst - Owned by Aristech Chemical Corporation (Pittsburgh, PA)

Crystalline silica-titania catalyst compositions, optionally containing magnesium, are disclosed; the titanium is introduced through the use of organo-titanate chelates wherein the titanium has a coordination number of at least 5. The compositions are used in acid-catalyzed reactions such as alkylation reactions.

4218345 - Olefin polymerization catalyst of chromium and process of preparing it - Owned by Chemplex Company (Rolling Meadows, IL)

A catalyst, a process of preparing the catalyst and a method of making polymers and copolymers of 1-olefins with the catalyst in which the catalyst is prepared by producing finely divided particles of chromium metal by a sublimation process and dispersing the sublimate of chromium particles with an organic liquid and providing a mixture comprising the chromium sublimate particles and a support such as silica. The mixture is then heat activated in an oxidizing atmosphere. In another aspect of the invention the chromium sublimate particles and support particles are further modified by having a titanium compound as a part of the mixture of chromium sublimate particles and support particles.

4728703 - Preparation of homopolymers and copolymers of ethene by Phillips catalysis - Owned by BASF Aktiengesellschaft (Ludwigshafen,DE)

Ethene polymers are prepared by Phillips catalysis using (1) a supported catalyst which is loaded with chromium and titanium and (2) a co-catalyst, (1) having been obtained by preparing (1.1) a chromium- and titanium-loaded catalyst intermediate from (1.1.a) a silicate carrier material, (1.1.b) a selected chromium compound and (1.1.c) a selected titanium compound and then (1.2) heating said catalyst intermediate in an oxygen-containing gas stream, the (1) used having been obtained by, in general terms, (1.1) preparing in the first stage (1.1.1) a suspension from (1.1.1.1) a finely divided silicate carrier material and (1.1.1.2) a liquid alkane, (1.1.2) then (1.1.2.1) combining the suspension resulting from (1.1.1.) with (1.1.2.2.) a finely divided chromium trioxide, (1.1.3) thereupon (1.1.3.1) combining the suspension obtained from (1.1.2) with (1.1.3.2) an alkanol, (1.1.4) thereafter (1.1.4.1) combining the suspension formed in (1.1.3) with (1.1.4.2) a titanium compound of the formula Ti(OR).sub.4, where R is alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl, and (1.1.5) finally evaporating the suspension obtained in (1.1.4) to dryness, and then (1.2) in the second stage first (1.2.1) treating the catalyst intermediate obtained in the first state (1.1) with a nitrogen stream, thereupon (1.2.2) heating the intermediate obtained in (1.2.1) in an oxygen-containing gas stream, and finally (1.2.3) treating the intermediate obtained in (1.2.2) with a nitrogen stream; and as (2) with an alkyllithium.

4147849 - Method of making polymers and copolymers of 1-olefins - Owned by Chemplex Company (Rolling Meadows, IL)

A new catalyst and a method of polymerizing olefins in which the catalyst is prepared by forming a mixture by dispersing on a finely divided, difficult to reduce, inorganic support of the class consisting of silica, alumina, thoria, zirconia, titania, magnesia and mixtures or composites thereof, an organic chromium compound pyrolytically decomposable in the substantial absence of oxygen to deposit a catalytically active residue along with a carbon residue as a contaminant on the support, then activating the mixture by subjecting the mixture to non-oxidative pyrolysis to and at a temperature within the range of about 600.degree.-2000.degree. F., thereby depositing on the support the chromium-bearing residue and carbon residue as a by-product from the pyrolytic decomposition of the organic chromium compound, and subjecting the activated catalyst after this activating to heat and an oxidizing gas such as air, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and the like, to burn off a substantial amount of the carbon residue and to modify and improve the characteristics of the activated catalyst.
