A percussion vibrator apparatus for treating patients having obstructive pulmonary disorders has a reciprocating member provided with a pad of foam rubber or the like having a 25% compression deflection of from about 5 psi to about 12 psi and a 60% compression deflection of from about 40 psi to about 80 psi. Reciprocating motion is imparted to the member supporting the pad at a high frequency of about 3200 to about 8500 strokes per minute by a drive system comprising a flexible shaft driven by an electric motor and a cam arrangement driven by the flexible shaft and coupled to the pad supporting member. The amplitude of the vibrator is set between 0.0625 and 0.1875 inch for best results.
The invention concerns a vibrator comprising an engagement face (11) which is adapted to engage a part of a body, and which is driven by an electric motor (18). The vibrator moreover comprises a housing (1) comprising a shaft (9) connected with the motor, and the vibrator has a frequency regulating device and an amplitude regulating device (2) for regulating the frequency and the amplitude, respectively, of the upward and downward movement of the engagement face. The vibrator is characterized in that the amplitude regulating device (2) comprises an inclined shaft (15) in extension of the shaft (9) connected with the motor, said inclined shaft being slidably mounted in a conversion element (14) having a through hole. The conversion element (14) is rotatably and slidably mounted in a recess in an arm (13) which is directly secured with respect to the engagement face (11), said recess having a width greater than the width of the conversion element and having an extent in the width which is substantially perpendicular to the direction of the upward and downward movement of the engagement face.
A chiropractic percussor apparatus includes a main housing adapted to be held by a user, an electric motor mounted in the main housing and having a rotary output shaft extending therefrom, an extension housing attached to an end of the main housing and extending outwardly therefrom and having an outer end defining an opening, an elongated push rod eccentrically mounted at an inner end on the rotary output shaft of the electric motor and extending through the extension housing to an outer end of the push rod having a central hole, a flexible coupler assembly supported by the outer end of the extension housing and coupled to the outer end of the push rod so as to permit the outer end of the push rod to undergo reciprocal lengthwise movement and wobbling side-to-side movement relative to the outer end of the extension housing, and a percussion-applying head assembly only centrally attached to the outer end of the push rod at the central hole therein.
A method of conditioning a body for swimming in conjunction with an inclined bench of the type having a sliding top carriage comprising the steps of: a) providing i) a vibration generation unit having a housing containing vibration generation and a vibrating member; ii) a member attachment to facilitate transmission of the generated vibration to the body; and a base for the vibration generation unit capable of orienting the vibrating member in a position generally parallel to an incline of the bench; b) orienting the vibration generation unit on the base so that its vibrating member reciprocates on a plane generally parallel to the bench; and, c) positioning and securing the vibration generation unit beneath the bench. Then a swimmer lying face down on and carried by the carriage can slide the carriage cyclically along the incline by pressing his hands on the vibrating member attachment specifically conditioning his arms and upper torso.
A therapeutic impact massager for massaging a body region of a person. The impact massager includes a frame mounted within a flexible fabric support member. The frame includes a plurality of compartments that movably receive conductive elements. Drive coils are mounted within the compartments adjacent to the conductive elements and produce a first pulsed magnetic field. The first pulsed magnetic field induces a second magnetic field within the conductive elements. The first and second magnetic fields interact to force the conductive elements towards the body region of a person to impact thereupon. A capacitor for storing electrical energy is coupled to the drive coils. A switch is coupled in series with the capacitor and drive coils and is movable between the closed state which allows electrical energy to flow from the capacitor to the drive mechanism, and an open state which prevents the discharge of electrical energy through the drive coils. A microprocessor is coupled to the switch and generates a logic command that shifts the switch between opened and closed states. The microprocessor is configured to energize the drive coils in a periodic and patterned manner to repeatedly force the conductive elements toward the body region which imparts a rhythmic wave massaging effect thereto. The impact massager preferably is in the form of a therapeutic garment that overlies the chest and back of a wearer. The therapeutic garment is designed to be used by persons with cystic fibrosis to alleviate the accumulation of mucus within the lungs.
