A wax composition, useful as a ski wax is made, comprising a rigid wax matrix, and from about 3 wt.% to about 45 wt.% of a thermoplastic, water soluble polymer disposed within the wax matrix. The ski wax provides a surface where the water soluble polymer will be leached out of the rigid wax matrix upon contact with water, to provide a boundary lubricant film.
This invention relates to formulations useful as lubricants for polyethylene snow sliders such as skis, snowboards and sleds. Lubricants of this type are comprised of i) waxes, ii) carbon fluorides of which the basic structure is represented by the formula CF.sub.x wherein x has values ranging from 0.1 to 1.2 and, iii) fluorinated additives of the formula wherein R.sub.f is independently a straight or branched perfluoroalkyl group; X is a direct bond, SO.sub.2 NH, SO.sub.2 N(R) wherein R is an alkyl group of up to six carbon atoms, or X is an alkylene group of up to ten carbon atoms interrupted by one or more --O--, --SO.sub.2 --, or --S-- groups; m is an integer from 4 to 30.
The invention relates to improved compositions comprising paraffin waxes and fluoropoylmer micro powders, and to their uses in products and articles where reduced friction is desirable, such as snow slider equipment.
The gliding properties of running surfaces for winter sports apparatus, e.g. skis and snowboards are improved by a mineral addition chosen from the sodalite group and tsaregorodtsevite-wadalite series or a mixture thereof. An ultramarine is especially preferred as the mineral additive. Gliding properties are similar to or improved in comparison to those obtainable with the addition of soot, carbon black or graphite. The mineral addition according to the invention can however be combined with the addition of soot, carbon black or graphite. The invention also opens up new possibilities in the coloration of running surfaces.
