A hand-held data-gathering unit is formed by removably connected control and power modules: The control module contains a keyboard, a display device, a data input probe, and a microprocessor. The power module contains a rechargeable battery with a converter and associated power logic, and a memory system with associated memory control logic. The hand-held unit has a normal low-power standby mode which is maintained during the absence of input data from either the keyboard or the data probe, and an operation mode which is initiated by the arrival of input data. During the operation mode, input data enters the control module and is forwarded to the memory in the power module. As data is gathered during portable operation, the memory may reach capacity or the battery voltage may drop, or both. The power module may be removed from the control module and replaced by a fresh power module with a fully charged battery and an empty memory. The expired power module is inserted into a service module for charging the battery or transmitting the data to a remote terminal, or both. The control module may also be inserted into the sevice module where it is activated by a stationary power supply and interfaced with the memory in the power module for stationary operation. In addition to transmitting the contents of the memory, the service module may receive data from the remote terminal and for storage in the memory. This received data may then be accessed and displayed through the control module.
The specification of the invention details the invention of a portable type data input terminal which can input a plurality of data in different forms and operates by a battery based power supply. The portable type data input terminal according to the invention comprises: an input unit to input graphic data and binary data; a unit for receiving the graphic data and binary data from the input unit, for converting the graphic data into the form of a digital signal of the pixels of such graphic data, and for converting the binary data into a form of a corresponding code signal; a control unit for signal processing the outputs of the signal converting apparatus; and a memory device to store the respective data which were processed by the control unit so as to correspond to each other.
A portable battery-powered golf analyzing device includes a keyboard usable in an input mode to insert data describing each golf shot made by a player. The data is formed into a digital word and stored in memory. The memory is of a type which is not erased unless a specific signal is intentionally applied thereto. In an output mode, the keyboard is used to form a digital word describing desired data. The memory is then searched and each stored word is compared with the inserted word. Correspondence between the inserted and stored words is counted and the results displayed. A receptacle for the portable unit includes a power supply for recharging batteries in the portable unit and circuits for applying an erasing potential to the memory. Indicators instruct the operator through the sequence of steps in entering a description.
A battery pack is detachably secured by a snap-type action to a handle of a generally gun-shaped scanning head in a system for electro-optically reading coded indicia, such as bar code symbols. The battery pack includes a set of rechargeable batteries mounted in a casing.
A facsimile apparatus comprises a housing constituting the outer surface of the facsimile apparatus, an original reading section for conveying an original between a first opening portion formed in a front portion of the upper surface of the housing and a front surface opening portion formed in the front surface of the housing, and a recording section for inserting a recording sheet through a second opening portion formed in the upper surface of the housing at a position closer to the rear side than the first opening portion and for discharging the recording sheet through the first opening portion. A cut sheet can be inserted/discharged through each opening portion. Since the first opening portion is commonly used for both an original and a recording sheet, the depth of the housing can be reduced. In addition, the housing can be designed to be flat and compact so as to be easily carried. The apparatus further includes a storage portion for a battery detachably set through a side surface on the rear side of the housing. A cut sheet can be inserted/discharged through each opening portion. Since the first opening portion is commonly used for both an original and a recording sheet, the depth of the housing can be reduced. In addition, the housing can be designed to be flat and compact so as to be easily carried. Furthermore, the apparatus can be used in a place where no commercial power supply is available, by receiving power from a battery.
An information processing apparatus having a resume function which can maintain security even when a plurality of users use a common information processing apparatus. A work state at a power-off time is preserved together with a work state name including a user's ID in a different area in a plurality of preservation areas for the resume operation function on a main memory for each user. When a power source is turned on again, data in the preservation area corresponding to the user's ID is used to reproduce the work state of the user at the power-off time. A work state preservation file on a file server apparatus in a network has a resume function which does not need battery back-up. When this information processing apparatus is used, a work state at a power-off time can be independently preserved and reproduced for each of users, thereby realizing a resume function that is excellent in terms of security and utility.
