Abstract
The headphone includes a cup-shaped case forming the coupling space and this cup-shaped case, in use, engages the user's head and encloses the user's ear. At least one electroacoustic transducer is included in the cup-shaped case, and the case either is designed as an acoustic frictional resistance or as a supporting structure of such a resistance. The headphone is equipped with acoustic and/or electrical systems compensating the drop at the low frequencies, and there are no reflecting surfaces located close to the external ear of the user. The low frequencies drop may be compensated by passive or blind diaphragms, or the diaphragm of the electroacoustic transducer may be coupled to an air mass. A headset, including two headphones, may be designed for quadraphonic reproduction.

4389542 - Orthodynamic headphone - Owned by AKG Akustische u. Kino-Gerate (AT)

Headphone earpieces which comprise each at least one electroacoustic transducer operating on the orthodynamic principle and including a small-mass diaphragm of an extension corresponding at least to that of an average auricle, with the coupling space of each of the earpieces being designed for a minimum reflection, are equipped with an ear cushion which, with the headphone in position of use, tightly encloses the coupling space toward the outside. The disadvantages of headphone with an orthodynamically driven diaphragm which have hitherto been used only with the coupling space tightly enclosed, may be eliminated by omitting the tight enclosure of the coupling space and effecting the coupling to the ear by means of an ear cushion (1) of reticulate foam material by which the coupling space is enclosed at least laterally and which, while resting against the ear (2) or the user's head, has an acoustic frictional resistance approximately of the order of magnitude of the transformed wave impedance of air, so that the diaphragm (3) oscillation is impeded predominantly by friction and the critical damping of the low-frequency resonance (70 to 300 Hz) of the diaphragm is insured.

5844998 - Headphone apparatus - Owned by Sony Corporation (Tokyo,JP)

A headphone apparatus comprising an acoustic unit for converting an audio signal to an acoustic sound, a supporting structure for supporting the acoustic unit keeping a predetermined distance to the ear of a listener and an acoustic equalizer provided in front of the acoustic unit for transferring the sound wave output from the acoustic equalizer to the ear of the listener after correcting the frequency characteristic thereof.

6554097 - Low-radiation headphone

The invention relates to a low-radiation headphone with right and left acoustic irradiation housings corresponding to the ears of the user, with each of the housings having an acoustic baffle (10") comprising MU-metal and accommodating dynamic audio transducers. The acoustic baffle (10") is formed in a manner permeable to sound in front of the audio transducers, and has a radiation dissipation zone (20) pointing at the temples of the user. The zone (20) dissipating radiation is provided through a greater density of the MU-metal than in the remaining area of the acoustic baffle (10") that is permeable to sound. The acoustic baffle (10") as a whole consists of MU-metal sheet and the audio transducer is perforated in one area (17), but otherwise solid. The radiation dissipation zone (20) is formed in the perforated area of the MU-metal sheet as one piece.

5519783 - Headphone assembly - Owned by Khyber Technologies Corporation (Fairlawn, OH)

A headphone assembly adapted for engaging a user's head includes an adjustable headband having first and second ends. A right ear piece is attached to a first end, and a left ear piece is attached to a second end of the headband. Each ear piece is substantially semi-circular shaped, and has a substantially inverted U-shaped shell having an inverted U-shaped inner wall. The U-shaped inner wall defines an acoustic cavity having a bottom end opening for receiving approximately the top half of the user's ear. A rear wall of the acoustic cavity has a number of holes extending therethrough behind which a speaker is mounted. An inverted U-shaped chamber is provided about the acoustic cavity. The right ear piece chamber will hold the electronic circuitry necessary for a cordless receiver. The left ear piece has a similar chamber which accepts a power board. A dome-shaped cover plate covers each of the speaker elements and the respective power board and circuit board, with the user's ear only partially enclosed by the ear piece. Alternatively, a planar cover plate covers each of the speaker elements and the respective circuit board, and a lower ear piece is pivotally attached to the upper ear piece for movement between an open position and a closed position. The lower ear piece also includes an acoustic cavity and has an open upper end for communicating with the bottom end opening of the U-shaped inner wall.

An inverted U-shaped chamber is provided about the acoustic cavity and the outer perimeter of the ear piece. The right ear piece chamber will hold the electronic circuitry necessary for a cordless receiver. The left ear piece has a similar chamber which accepts a power board for holding a plurality of batteries which provides the power source for the electronic circuitry mounted in the opposite ear piece. A dome-shaped cover plate covers each of the speaker elements and the respective power board and circuit board, to create a cordless headphone wherein the user's ear is only partially enclosed by the ear piece. Foam pads mounted on the ear pieces contact the user's head to provide comfort to the user.
