The improved mattress of the present invention is adapted to sleep two or more people in side by side relation, each person being supported on resilient means defining a separate area of preselected firmness, the two areas being deposed lengthwise of the mattress in essentially parallel relation and being of different firmnesses. The mattress also includes resilient means defining an intermediate area between and integrally connecting the first two areas, and also disposed lengthwise of the mattress and having a graduated range of firmnesses from that of the first area to that of the second area. The resilient means may comprise elastomeric foam layers and/or sets of springs, and a detachable fluid-filled layer may be deposed thereover for improved comfort. The mattress is inexpensive and durable and offers individualized support and improved comfort for both sleepers without any sharp uncomfortable line of demarcation between the areas of differing firmness.
A hybrid mattress has two or more individual support structures such as springs and a unitary comfort casing. The comfort casing is formed with two or more internal pouches each adapted to snugly receive one of the individual support structures and to hold the support structures in a planar, contiguous manner. The individual support means can be selected to have different load bearing characteristics from each other, thereby providing a continuous mattress with different support and comfort capabilities for different occupants.
An independent suspension mattress has an opening in the middle section of the innerspring unit that is long enough along the longitudinal center to provide independence of the sleeping sections on the two sides of the opening. In a coil spring unit the coils adjacent to the centerline and the middle section are untied.
A mattress comprising a plurality of parallel mattress blocks, and a mattress cover for retaining the mattress blocks together as a unit. The mattress cover has a plurality of projecting segments for insertion between adjacent mattress blocks.
A mattress including an innerspring, upholstery topper layers including at least one foam layer, and quilt panel layers. At least one upholstery foam layer includes a firming edge of foam about its perimeter. The firming edge of the upholstery foam layer functions to provide a firmer mattress edge without compromising the thickness of the mattress or requiring additional materials or labor operations during manufacturing.
A mattress cover for use on a conventional innerspring mattress to give the same feeling as is provided by a waterbed, including a liquid-filled flat bladder having a small height from its top wall to its bottom wall. Insulative padding is included in a casing and held in position atop the bladder to reduce loss of a user's body heat to the liquid, and to provide support. The floating sensation imparted by the flotation cover is facilitated by a wall construction being of sufficient thickness to contain the water within a substantially fixed volume. Fibrous material may be arranged within the bladder to damp wave action of the liquid to a limited degree. A liner surroundingly encloses the lower parts of the bladder within the fabric casing to contain liquid leakage.
