Abstract
In an optically pumped high power laser the optical pump includes a housing containing a pair of flash lamps and an elliptical reflector assembly for reflecting the optical pumping radiation into the laser gain medium, such as a YAG rod. Water coolant is directed through the housing in contacting relation with the YAG rod and flash lamps. An ultraviolet band reject filter, comprising a split cylindrical sleeve, is disposed surrounding the laser gain medium in between the laser gain medium and the flash lamps and in contact with the water coolant.

4715039 - Internal resonator water cooled ion laser - Owned by Spectra-Physics, Inc. (San Jose, CA)

A single unitary structure for an ion laser in which the plasma tube with a surrounding electromagnet is integrated with the laser resonator tube. Cooling channels are formed by a pair of annular channels between the resonator tube, electromagnet and plasma tube. A helical, flow path in the annular channels provides uniform cooling around the resonator tube.

4507789 - YAG Laser system - Owned by Quantronix Corporation (Smithtown, NY)

A reliable, low cost, light weight, CW pumped Nd:YAG laser with optional Q-switching is provided with a rail for the laser optics that isolates the optical axis from movement of the laser head housing. A laser pot is provided with a housing and quickly detachable cover both molded of a resin that is impervious to water, optically opaque, possesses low thermal deformation, high dielectric strength and resistance to damage by light and UV radiation. The pot is formed with a cavity lined by molded reflectors and divided by a septum interposed between the laser rod and lamp. The lamp is removable with the cover and is readily coupled with the lamp sockets designed for accepting variations in lamp manufacturing tolerances. The power supply for the laser resonator is transformerless and parallel triggering is employed for the lamp. The cooling system is provided with a water immersed heat exchanger defined by a coated copper tube that prevents ionic action.

4417341 - Glass laser amplifier having a number of trigger members - Owned by The President of Osaka University (JP)

A glass laser amplifier having a number of trigger members comprising a number of flash lamps capable of emitting light to pump a laser glass arranged around said laser glass, a number of reflection mirrors for reflecting light from each of said flash lamps against said laser glass, and a number of trigger members each arranged at a side of a flash lamp opposite the reflection mirror with the flash lamp being held therebetween. Deflection of electric current in the flash lamp by the reflection mirrors is eliminated, and local heating of the inner wall of the flash lamp is prevented by the efficient elimination of the current deflection, resulting in an extensive life of the entire assembly.

4563763 - Method and apparatus for cooling a slab laser - Owned by Board of Trustees, Leland Stanford University (Stanford, CA)

In a high average power slab laser, heat generated in the laser slab is conducted through a thin layer of thermally conductive gas, such as hydrogen, helium or air, and then through an optically transparent window into a flow of liquid coolant. In a preferred embodiment, a second flow of liquid coolant is employed for cooling of the pumping lamps such lamp liquid coolant flow being partitioned from the slab liquid coolant flow by means of an optically transparent partition through which the pump radiation is directed from the lamps to the slab. In another embodiment, the slab coolant flow is controlled so as to operate the laser slab in a self-annealing temperature regime, whereby thermal stresses are annealed out in use and higher average output beam power is obtained.

5177759 - Method and apparatus of fabricating a reflector - Owned by Laser Photonics, Inc. (Orlando, FL)

An apparatus and method of fabricating an tubular reflector for use in a laser. The tubular reflector is formed by first grinding smooth the inside surface of a round metal tube. The polished tube is inserted into an elliptical mold. The mold is then pressed to shape the round tube into an elliptical tube. Next the inner wall of the tube is coated with a highly reflective material. Finally, a light source and a laser rod are positioned in the tube such that after the light source is turned on, light is reflected off the reflective walls of the tube to the laser rod resulting in laser light emitting from the ends of the rod. It may also be preferable that the elliptical tube be formed by combining and bending two flat metal sheets.
