Abstract
A system for controlling the operation of an appliance of the type having a plurality of machine functions to be activated and deactivated in accordance with a control strategy includes a plurality of selectable cycles each made up of a series of events and an array of user actuatable membrane switching devices for selecting at least one cycle of operation for the appliance. The array of membrane switching devices also allow the user to program an optional event within the selected cycle and to select a time period for at least one of the events of the selected cycle. A control logic includes a resident program with a series of instructions for the operation of the applicance and a memory for storing data which is retrievable in response to actuation of the membrane switching devices so that the appliance operates in accordance with the resident program and the retrieved data. A display panel includes various individual displays for indicating the selected cycle, optional event, time period for the one event of the cycle, and the time remaining in the selected cycle. A method of controlling the operation of the appliance includes displaying a time period for and the time remaining in a selected cycle, continuously monitoring the membrane switching devices to detect user actuated changes in the operation of the appliance during the selected cycle, and disabling certain membrane switching devices during the selected cycle to thereafter eliminate the possibility of user actuated changes associated with such disabled switching devices.

Actuators on a control panel for entering single functions of an individual operating program cycle which can be invoked under a given name and can be properly executed under microprocessor control are also used for setting particular operating program sequences or particular parameter values of program functions. The actuators can be actuated in at least one sequence of function entries such that the sequence of function entries is a code for particular update functions.

4364655 - Photographic darkroom control system with timing means

Process timing and controlling system for use in photographic darkrooms involving multiple timing and control process steps including a control console, programmable in at least one channel to step through substantially all timing and control process steps, timing means in at least one channel for measuring time remaining in a particular process step, timing indicator means in at least one channel for indicating time remaining in a particular process step, a source of power connecting the console and the timing means which when activated supplies power to the console and timing mean, means for initiating a program step in at least one channel, switching means in at least one channel for stepping through the steps independently of the programmed time, a plurality of relays for operating programmed timing and control functions, and relay driving means programmed to select an appropriate output to activate the relay.

The invention provides a cloth washer, a dish washer-dryer and a control system associated therewith, which facilitate establishing of a special operating program. The cloth washer comprises selector means for selecting one of a plurality of basic operating programs, which are individually preprogrammed with specifications of washing operation, rinsing operation and spin-dry operation, special operating program setting means for establishing a special operating program by correcting at least one of the specifications of the washing operation, the rinsing operation and the spin-dry operation preprogrammed for the one selected by the selector means among the plurality of basic operating programs, and control means for controlling the washing operation, the rinsing operation and the spin-dry operation according to the special operating program set by the special operating program setting means.

6718587 - Method for estimating and adjusting time remaining in an appliance - Owned by General Electric Company (Schenectady, NY)

A method is provided for estimating the time required to perform an operational cycle of an appliance, the cycle including at least one variable operational mode. The method includes providing a memory for storing historical data of previously executed cycles of the appliance, accessing the memory in light of a user-selected option for a present cycle, and computing an initial estimated time for performing the present cycle of the appliance based, at least in part, on a time estimate for the at least one operational mode. The method continues with determining an actual time used for performing at least one occurrence of the operational mode, relating the actual time used to the time estimate used for computing the initial estimated time for performing the present cycle of the appliance, and adjusting the initial estimated time for performing the present cycle in light of any differences between the actual and estimated times for the at least one operational mode.

7013578 - System and method for controlling a dryer appliance - Owned by General Electric Company (Schenectady, NY)

System and method for controlling an appliance for drying clothing articles is provided. The appliance has a container for receiving the clothing articles. A motor is provided for rotating the container about an axis. A heater is provided for supplying heated air to the container during a dry cycle. A sensor is provided for providing a signal indicative of moisture content of the articles. Memory is provided memory for storing historical stop time data of respective dry cycles. A noise-reduction filter is coupled to receive the signal from the moisture sensor to provide selectable filtering to that signal. A timer provides a signal indicative of elapsed time upon start of the dry cycle. A module is responsive to the historical data in the memory for determining an initial estimate of the stop time of the dry cycle to be executed. A processor allows for estimating the stop time of the dry cycle as the cycle is being executed. The estimation of the stop time is based on a respective functional relationship of the noise-reduced sensor signal, and the timer signal, relative to one or more characteristics of the articles and one or more desired values of predetermined dry-cycle parameters selectable by a respective user of the dryer. The initial estimate of the stop time is superceded by the stop time estimated by the processor as the cycle is being executed.
