Abstract
An analogue display includes an electrical sensitive medium enclosed between two sets of electrodes. The two sets of electrodes are registered and overlap to provide background and one or more shaped index characters, each at a plurality of selectable positions. Voltage signals are applied to the electrodes so that the medium is held in an OFF state in the region between selected electrodes, while simultaneously voltage signals are applied so that in other regions of the medium, the medium is in an ON state. The medium may be of liquid crystal, electroluminescent or gaseous material. One set of electrodes may have a meander configuration, the other set a segmented configuration. The index character or characters may be displayed at one, two or three positions, each character being of different shape, for meter or timepiece applications. The voltage signals applied may be binary coded and in preference pseudo-random sequence binary codes.

Disclosed is a display device which comprises a pair of plate-like light transmittable members; a display member located so as to form a predetermined pattern between a pair of light transmittable members, the display member being composed of a material whose light transmittance is electrically changed; and a pair of light transmittable electrodes, at least one of a pair of light transmittable electrodes having a shape corresponding to the pattern, a pair of light transmittable electrodes being formed on a pair of light transmittable members and for electrically controlling the material. The camera having the display device comprises illuminating means for illuminating the display portion. The display portion is illuminated in accordance with a luminance of a subject. The illuminating light can be also used for measuring a distance and for illuminating another display element.

4527863 - Electronic displays - Owned by The Secretary of State for Defence in Her Britannic Majesty's Government (London,GB2)

A polar co-ordinate display of full 360.degree. arc comprised of electrode bearing substrates each side of a layer of dyed phase change liquid crystal material. One set of electrodes comprises concentric spirals, the other set comprises radials. The display is multiplex addressed using four select waveform signals. These four signals V.sub.1, V.sub.2, V.sub.3, and V.sub.x satisfy the following conditions: where V.sub.p is an upper threshold voltage, and V.sub.0 a saturation voltage for dyed phase change hysteresis, and may be of the coded form; V.sub.1 =,1010,; V.sub.2 =,1100,; V.sub.3 =,0101,; V.sub.x =,0110,. These may be generated using two 2-bit registers with exclusive OR-gate feedback.

A watch display comprises time display hands (3, 4) and a reflecting digital display (5) which acts as dial for the hands, the display being transparent under the effect of an electric field and opaque in the absence of the field.

5477358 - Chiral nematic liquid crystal display with homeotropic alignment and negative dielectric anisotropy - Owned by Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH)

A liquid crystal cell including chiral nematic liquid material with negative dielectric anisotropy. The cell is placed between two orthogonal polarizers. In the absence of an applied field, the liquid crystal molecules assume a homeotropic alignment. The liquid crystal molecules assume a twisted pattern in the field-on state.
