Abstract
An apparatus which subdivides an adhesive-coated web of paper or imitation cork into a succession of uniting bands which are draped around groups of coaxial cigarettes and filter plugs to form filter cigarettes has two drums rotating in opposite directions about parallel axes. One of the drums is a suction drum and serves to advance the leader of the web toward the nip of the two drums where the leader is severed to yield successive uniting bands. The suction drum has a number of equidistant axially parallel peripheral grooves each disposed in front of a cutting edge. The other drum carries detachable knives with cutting edges extending beyond the periphery of the other drum so that they can penetrate into the oncoming grooves during travel past the nip. The drums are rotated by mating gears and the radius of the cylinder which is formed by the cutting edges of the knives exceeds the radius of the pitch circle of the gear which drives the other drum. The cutting edges of the suction drum form a cylinder with a radius which is equal to or somewhat smaller than the radius of the pitch circle of the gear serving to drive the suction drum. The cutting edges of the knives define epicycloidal paths during travel toward, during penetration into and during withdrawal from the corresponding grooves. Those portions of the paths which are disposed in the respective grooves resemble loops with zeniths located in the interior of the grooves or at the entrances to such grooves. This ensures that expansion or contraction of the drums cannot result in clashing of the cooperating cutting edges.

4914997 - Transverse cutting device for cutting into lengths a strip traveling continuously along a predetermined path - Owned by G.D. Societa Per Azioni (Bologna,IT)

A transverse cutting device for cutting into lengths a strip traveling continuously along a predetermined path, which device presents a drum for feeding and guiding the strip through a cutting station; and a cutting unit for successively cutting the strip transversely; at least one cutting element on the cutting unit being moved along an annular path lying in a plane intersecting the path of the strip in the cutting station, and along a given line forming an adjustable angle with a transversal intersecting the path of the strip; and the roller presenting peripheral grooves for longitudinally stretching the strip in the cutting station.

4782729 - Animal fiber cutting machine

A machine for cutting animal tissue into pieces, comprises (a) a frame, (b) slicer means including slicers carried by the frame to rotate for slicing the tissue into elongated strands fed along parallel paths of widths determined by spacing of the slicers, (c) rotary cutter means including cutters carried by the frame to rotate and intercept the strands fed along said paths, and for cutting the strands crosswise thereof and at intervals predetermined by rotary spacing of said cutters, thereby to form said pieces having predetermined sizes.

6058818 - Convertible pitch knife apparatus - Owned by R.A. Jones & Co. Inc. (Covington, KY)

Rotary knife apparatus used in connection with a pouch form, fill and seal machine capable of handling a substantially wide range of pouch sizes or variations in pouch fills. The apparatus includes major and minor knife hubs cantilevered on respective shafts and driven by a continuous backwrapped chain or timing belt. Rigid knife blades are mounted to interchangeable knife blocks on the major knife hub having varying radial dimensions to accommodate varying pouch chordal distances. The minor knife hub is laterally adjustable relative to the major knife hub along a fixed path to accommodate the substantial changeover.

4487377 - Web winding apparatus and method - Owned by Finanziaria Lucchese S.p.A. (Lucca,IT)

In the high speed rewinder of the present invention a parent roll of paper unwinds from a back-stand to feed a wide web of paper to a perforator, web separator, core-feeder and log rewinder. The perforator includes a stationary ledger blade and a rotating knife-blade roll which cut lines of perforations across the web. The web separator includes a pair of operatively opposed rolls rotating in synchronism, one of which has a spiral groove therein and the other of which has means arranged to force the web of paper into the groove to tear the web within the groove. A secondary winder roll is disposed in spaced relation to the first winder roll. The secondary winder roll can be slowed down to cause the core to advance between the first and second winder roll. A diameter control means is disposed near the secondary winder roll to limit the outer diameter of the finished log of paper. A differential speed between the secondary winder roll and the diameter control roll will move the finished log into a log receiving hopper and differential speed between the first and second winder rolls will advance another core and pick up the leading edge of the just-severed web, advancing the core to repeat the sequence.

5755654 - Method and apparatus for pinch perforating multiply web material - Owned by James River Corporation of Virginia (Richmond, VA)

A method and apparatus for pinch perforating multi-ply web material to increase the perforation ply bond and/or perforation ply bond retention by pinching the multiple plies of web material together and then perforating the material using an anvil and perforator blade design provided on a perforating apparatus. Specifically, the apparatus comprises a roll mounted contoured perforator blade which cooperates with a beveled anvil to produce perforation ply bonds perpendicular to the length of the multiple plies of web material. The desired anvil/perforator blade interface angle between 0.degree. and 20.degree. is provided by beveling the anvil. A 15.degree. beveled anvil is preferred to provide a 5.degree. anvil/perforator blade interface angle. By pinching and bonding the leading edges and other predetermined points of the multi-ply tissue paper together before cutting, the likelihood of ply separation, missing plies and ply mismatch is greatly reduced.
