Abstract
Character information to be displayed is stored in a temporary memory. Character data (ASCII code) is provided from the temporary memory to a character generator. The character generator is responsive to the character data to convert them into a dot display signal displaying each character in m columns and n rows. Then the display signal of each common row of the respective characters is transferred to a shift register in a bit serial fashion. Each time the display signal for one character is transferred a display blank signal is loaded in the shift register. A dot matrix display comprises rows of the same number as the cells of the shift register for producing a blank of one column between the adjacent characters, while displaying each character in m columns and n rows. After display is made on the display for all the rows, a leftward shift is made in succession one column by one column from the lowest row. When the shift amount comes to correspond to one character, new character information is loaded in the temporary memory.

A display system is disclosed for depicting a moving image of a graphic representation of a sequence of, for example, letters, words, symbols or artwork. The system comprises a display area defined by an array of light emitting diodes (LED's) which form a matrix having a series of rows and columns. The LED's are arranged in rows parallel to the intended direction of movement of an image and the columns are arranged orthogonal to the intended direction of movement. The LED's are further arranged in first and second groups in an interlacing fashion, wherein successive LED's of the first and second groups are spaced apart by one or more columns which do not contain LED's. A controller is further included for generating a plurality of electrical signals in sequential groups, each such group of signals representing encoded data of a sample portion of the graphic to be represented by one column of the matrix at a prescribed instant, and successive groups of the sets of data providing further encoded data of successive sample portions of the graphic to be represented by a column and successive prescribed instants. The system is capable of displaying high-definition graphics with only a fraction of the picture elements necessary in prior art systems, and yet which produces an image that does not tend to break up into momentary fragments, jitter, or wobble.

The pager further includes a character ROM for generating character image data according to the received message data. The total length of the message is detected by detecting the number of the message data or the character image data.

To provide an inexpensive test apparatus for testing the performance of control computers in automotive vehicles, for example sufficiently simple to be affordable by gasoline service stations, small garages and the like, a shift register-memory combination unit is provided receiving the data in serial, preferably Pulse-Duration-Modulated (PDM), form, and a monostable flip-flop is connected to the shift register, connected to be SET by a flank, preferably the trailing flank, of the first bit of a data word, and having a timing period somewhat longer than the longest interval between sequential bits, the monostable flip-flop being connected to control the shift register to transfer data in the shift register to a memory section thereof for simultaneous display of the data in the various storage locations of the memory section of the shift register. A counter can be used to inhibit application of clock pulses to the shift register beyond a predetermined count so that only those data which have been transmitted up to the inhibit count will be stored in the shift register for subsequent display.
