A machining center comprising tool spindle means, tool changing means, tool drum assembly means including first and second axially spaced integral tool drums each having a plurality of tool holding chucks about the periphery thereof, each of the tool holding chucks having a movable jaw, extension means operatively associated with each the movable jaw on one of the first and second tool drums for permitting movement of the associated movable jaw from a predetermined remote location, tool housing means for rotatably supporting the tool drum assembly means including first actuator means for displacing the one of the extension means of the one tool drum located at a selected location, and second actuator means for displacing one of the movable jaws of the other one of the tool drums located at a selected location, means for supporting the tool housing means for axial displacement, and means for axially displacing the tool housing means from a first position to a second position.
A tool magazine for an automatic machine producing various machining operations with the aid of machine tools held by a machine spindle. The magazine for replaceable tool is adapted to hold a plurality of tools each in tool holding mechanisms being held on a tool pallet mounted on a rotary table of the automatic machine. The spindle cooperates with the magazine so as to be in alignment with a tool holding mechanism of the magazine at a tool replacement position; whereby a new tool can be withdrawn from the tool holding mechanisms by the spindle or a used tool held by the spindle can be inserted into the tool holding mechanism. In addition, the magazine is indexed, to align the several tool holding mechanisms, one at a time, with the spindle at the tool replacement position by transmitting spindle movement, preferably through a tool, to the magazine. The magazine may include a plurality of magazine units, each carrying several tool holding mechanisms on a supporter adapted for rotation about a shaft in response to defined spindle movement. Releasable lock mechanisms prevent non-commanded support rotation.
Locking device for releasably securing tools or tool holders provided on their circumference with opposed recesses, in tool pockets open at one side, along an edge of a movable magazine means, more particularly, a rotatable magazine disc for a machine tool, with locking members which are movable into and out of the recesses in pairs, and with actuating mechanisms for the locking members, which locking members are deflectable by the actuating mechanisms with respect to the recesses transversely to the tool axis.
A machine tool having a tool spindle rotatable about a horizontal axis provided with first and second tool magazines and first and second tool transfer devices. The first tool magazine removably stores a plurality of small diameter tools, with the axes of the small diameter tools extending horizontally. The first tool transfer device transfers the small diameter tools between the first tool magazine and the tool spindle. The second tool magazine is installed on the floor at one side of a column of the machine tool in a horizontal direction perpendicular to the tool spindle and removably stores a plurality of large diameter tools, with the axes of the large diameter tools extending vertically. The second tool magazine is provided with a turnover mechanism, which pivotally moves a large diameter tool indexed to a large tool removal position so as to lay the large diameter tool horizontally in parallel relation with the tool spindle. The second transfer device is movable between the large tool removal position and the tool spindle so that a new large tool is removed from the second tool magazine at the large tool removal position to be inserted into the tool spindle, while a used large tool is taken out from the tool spindle to be returned to the second tool magazine at the large tool removal position.
