Abstract
A motion translator is used in an impact printer of the type having a printhead and platen that move relative to each other, for driving the print ribbon in a single, fixed direction. A drive cable has each end connected to opposite sides of the frame of the printer and is wrapped 360.degree. around a flange of the outer housing of the translator. The translator is rotatably mounted on the printhead carriage so that as the carriage moves relative to the platen, the housing is rotated by the drive cable. An upper clutch engages a driven, output shaft when the housing is rotated in one direction and does not engage the shaft when the housing is rotated in the opposite direction. A hubbed drive gear is positioned to rotate opposite the rotation of the housing. A lower clutch turns the driven, output shaft in the fixed direction when the housing rotates in the opposite direction by engaging the hub of the drive gear. When the housing is rotated in the one direction, the lower clutch does not engage. Therefore, the driven output shaft provides the fixed direction irrespective of the direction of motion between the printhead and platen.

5970822 - Unidirectional output from bi-directional inputs bicycle transmission - Owned by Jung; Jae Yeon (Seoul,KR)

A reversible drive device for bicycles, allowing a bicycle to go forward by a normal or reversed rotating force of a pedal without forcing a user to operate any lever, is disclosed. The drive device has a simple construction with a reduced number of parts and allows the rear wheel 10 to be rotatable in a reversed direction, thus allowing the bicycle to be moved backward. The drive device is integrated into a single assembly and is detachably attached to either the rear wheel hub shaft 11 or a pedal shaft 21, so the device allows a user to easily repair or change the drive device and improves work efficiency while producing the drive device. Two crescent stoppers 18 are formed on each end of the fixed shaft 17 so as to effectively prevent the shaft holding yoke of the rear wheel fork 1 from being unexpectedly opened.

4758108 - Printing apparatus with carriage drive utilized to feed print and erase ribbons and/or to feed the print ribbon and shift the erase ribbon - Owned by Brother Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha (Aichi,JP)

A printer, including a first and a second feed mechanism supported by a carriage for feeding a print ribbon and an erase ribbon, respectively, at least one rotatable shaft supported by the reciprocating carriage rotatably in opposite directions, a one-way clutch for transmitting the shaft rotation in one of the opposite directions to the first feed mechanism, and inhibiting transmission of the rotation in the other direction, and a control mechanism for inhibiting transmission of the shaft rotation to the second feed mechanism when the printer is in a printing mode, and transmitting the shaft rotation to the second ribbon mechanism when the printer is in a correction mode, whereby the carriage reciprocation activates the first and second feed mechanisms. A converter may be provided for converting the shaft rotation into movements of a ribbon lift to shift the erase ribbon between an erasing and an inoperative position. The rotation control mechanism inhibits transmission of the shaft rotation to the converter while in the printing mode, but transmits the rotation to the converter while in the correction mode. Thus, the carriage reciprocation also cause the shifting movements of the erase ribbon.

4611937 - Ribbon feed mechanism for a printer - Owned by Silver Seiko Ltd. (Kashiwazaki,JP)

A printer having a print ribbon feed mechanism is disclosed which allows optimal feeding of a print ribbon, eliminating unnecessary consumption of the ribbon. The mechanism includes first and second clamp means mounted on a stationary section and a print carrier of the machine, respectively, which are both controlled in accordance with movement of a print head from and to a print enabling position. Means are provided which are connected to a carrier indexing mechanism for impositively driving print ribbon supply and takeup spools disposed on the stationary section to wind a print ribbon onto them during a carrier return operation whereas they allow the ribbon to be unwound from the ribbon spools when the carrier advances.

6523437 - Device having a motor and having a controllable intermediate transmission gear for driving a plurality of drive wheels of the device - Owned by Sagem SA (Paris,FR)

A device (1), particularly a facsimile apparatus, has a reversible motor (26), an intermediate transmission gear (29) which is drivable by the motor (26), and three drive wheels (44, 48, 51) which are drivable with the aid of the intermediate transmission gear (29). The intermediate transmission gear (29) includes a basic member (30) which is drivable by the motor (26), a control member (36), and a drive member (37). A first unidirectional coupling of the basic member (30) and the control member (36), and a second unidirectional coupling of the basic member (30) and the drive member (37) are constructed to transmit power in opposite directions of rotation (31, 32). The control member (36) is adapted to selectively establish a drive transmission between the motor (26) and at least one drive wheel (44, 48, 51), and the drive member (37) is adapted to drive the drive wheels (44, 48, 51).

4789256 - Ribbon cartridge for printing machines - Owned by Ing. C. Olivetti & C., S.p.A. (Ivrea,IT)

The ribbon (17) has an external run between the type element (25) and platen of a daisy-wheel typewriter. This run stretches between terminal members (59) which protrude from side arms (33 and 34) of the cartridge casing (18) and are fixed to the distal ends of arms (39, 41) pivotally mounted in the casing (18) at pivot (52). The arms (39, 41) are biased downwardly by wire springs (67) to expose the typing line. Ribbon lift levers of the typewriter raise the arms simultaneously to position a selected one of three tracks on the ribbon at the level of the typing point and a single drive shaft provides for the advancement of the ribbon. The cartridge comprises a feed spool and a take-up spool for the ribbon, a drive roller and a pressure roller which nip the ribbon internally to the casing, a transmission mechanism having a series of pinions and gears for transmitting the drive motion from the drive shaft of the typewriter to the pressure roller and to the take-up spool of the cartridge. A gear of the transmission mechanism is coaxial with the tke-up spool and is connected with the take-up spool by means of a friction clutch, which permits a slip motion between the gear and the take-up spool.
