A process for treating the blood-brain barrier by the systemic administration of flurbiprofen (3-fluoro-4-phenylhydratropic acid) or a salt or ester thereof. Dosage forms are also disclosed.
Prodrugs containing an active drug molecule linked to a polyethylene glycol group, and a method of use thereof are described. Exemplary soluble ester prodrugs contain naproxen, triamcinolone acetonide, gancyclovir, taxol, cyclosporin, dideoxyinosine, trihydroxy steroids, and flurbiprofen molecules linked to polyethylene glycol (PEG) groups. Pharmaceutical compositions containing these prodrugs, and a method of using these esters for treating disease states or symptoms are also described.
Sustained and enhanced analgesic response is elicited in a mammalian organism in need of such treatment, i.e., a mammal suffering pain, by administering thereto a unit dosage sustainedly enhancing, analgesically effective amount of the free acid S(+) flurbiprofen enantiomer, said enantiomer being substantially free of its R(-) flurbiprofen antipode.
