Abstract
A breath actuated device for the oral inhalation of medicaments in finely divided powder form, comprising a chamber (72) having one or more inlet ports for the entry of air and an outlet in direct communication with a mouthpiece (66) and positioned within the chamber, means for separating the lid and base components (62A, 62B) of a capsule (as defined herein) containing the medicament while holding the capsule substantially vertically to expose an aperture in the base component facilitating access to the powdered medicament and means for supporting the base component of the capsule containing the powdered medicament in a substantially vertical position, the inlet ports, outlet port and means for supporting the base component of the capsule being arranged such that when the device is operated by suction at the mouthpiece an air flow is established from the entry ports to the outlet port directly across the aperture in the base component of the capsule causing the particles of powdered medicament in the base component of the capsule to become entrained in the air flow. In a preferred embodiment the device comprises a carousel (54) which retains a plurality of capsules (62) and may be rotated to introduce the capsules sequentially into the chamber (72). The means for separating the two components of the capsule may comprise a piston assembly (58) movable between an engaging position in which the piston grips the lid of the capsule (62A) and a dispensing position, said movement causing the lid of the capsule to be removed from the base (62B).

5685294 - Powder inhaler having magazine storage and a hinged mouthpiece - Owned by Boehringer Ingelheim KG (Ingelheim am Rhein,DE)

The invention relates to an inhaler for the inhalation of powdered, more particularly micronised drug preparations from capsules, the housing 10 of the inhaler containing tubular chambers 15 for receiving and holding the capsules, in a revolver magazine with an air inlet at the bottom and an air outlet 25 at the opposite end of the chamber opening into a mouthpiece 11, and a cutting device 19 with two blades 21 which are movable into the interior of the chamber in order to open the capsules near the top and bottom ends thereof.

5239992 - Loose powder inhaler with inhalation-actuated dosing piston - Owned by Societe Francaise d'Aerosols et de Bouchage (Le Treport,FR)

An inhaler for powder products comprising a housing having an oral suction mouthpiece, a piston contained within the housing for movement in opposite directions, and an elastic member for urging the piston in one direction. The mouthpiece connects with a chamber in which the piston is located so that inhaling through the mouthpiece draws the piston toward the user's mouth. The piston includes a charging cavity for holding a charge of powder product. The cavity communicates with the internal volume of the mouthpiece as the piston is drawn toward the user's mouth whereby the charge is dispensed and inhaled by the user.

4811731 - Devices for administering medicaments to patients - Owned by Glaxo Group Limited (London,GB2)

A device is provided for administering medicaments in solid finely divided form to patients. The device comprising a housing, a tray mounted in the housing and movable between first and second positions relative to the housing, a support disc provided on the tray and adapted to receive a carrier provided with at least one medicament container. A plunger is operable to penetrate a container registered therewith to open the container, movement of the tray from its first to its second position being such as to cause the support to bring a container into registration with the plunger. Air enters through an air inlet and there is an outlet through which a patient can inhale air having medicament therein.

5503144 - Powdered medicament dispensing device - Owned by Norton Healthcare Limited (Harlow,GB)

A powder inhalation device includes a powder reservoir which contains a powdered medicament and a volume of air. The volume of air is disposed between an upper surface of the powdered medicament and a cover member of the powder reservoir. A metering chamber extends from the powder reservoir, and an apparatus is included for compressing the volume of air within the reservoir. A passage extending from the reservoir to the atmosphere is provided to allow air to vent from the powder reservoir, through the metering chamber, and into the atmosphere as the pressure of the volume of air in the powder reservoir is increased by the compressing apparatus. The volume of air thereby causes the powdered medicament to be forced into the metering chamber, and through a selectively openable barrier into an inhaling chamber.

4907583 - Device in powder inhalators - Owned by Aktiebolaget Draco (Lund,SE)

Device in a previously known powder inhalator intended for inhalation of an air flow which contains pharmacologically active compound in micronized form. The powder inhalator comprises a nozzle unit (2) with a nozzle aperture (2a) as well as a container unit (3) with a releasing or dosing unit (6) for delivering the active compound. The air flow generated by inhalation is at least partly aspirated through an air conduit (7) located in the container unit (3), which conduit extends from an air inlet (8), communicating with the environment, via said releasing or dosing unit (6), up to said nozzle unit (2). According to the invention, deflector devices are stationarily arranged in the container unit (3) and/or in the nozzle unit (2), said deflector devices, for example in the shape of a helical channel portion (13), being arranged to create a powerful deflecting movement for the purpose of disrupting said powder particles into the respirable particle size distribution (less than 5 .mu.m).
