Abstract
An opening structure preferably located in a top panel of a one-way packaging container provides a pour opening which can be reclosed after the initial opening. The structure is prepared by positioning and sewing a portion of a strip of web material on the panel, defining a pour opening area within the secured strip portion by applying a cut or weakening line forming a boundary. The pour opening area of the panel is retained in its original position in the panel. Then a second, unsecured portion of the strip is folded back over the first portion to cover the first portion and the pour opening area. Securing zones are produced to secure the second strip portion to the panel both within the pour opening area and a surrounding region to thereby obtain a hermetically sealed opening structure on the packaging container. The pour opening is uncovered by lifting the second strip portion so that the cut-out section of the panel is removed. After the desired quantity of the contents of the container has been discharged, the second strip portion and the cut-out section of the panel attached thereto is folded back over the pour opening so that snap-action engagement of the edges of the cut-out panel section with the edges of the pour opening results in a closure which, although no longer hermetically sealed, is mechanically secured.

5201698 - Pull tab for opening beverage cartons and method of opening

A paper package for use with milk, fruit juice or the like beverage products having a pulling-to-open member of polyethelene terephthalate and polyester film and an adhesive of synthetic rubber such as nitrile rubber for the provision of a positive opening effect of such packages.

5515665 - Method and apparatus for positioning a closure on a container - Owned by Xerox Corporation (Stamford, CT)

A method of and apparatus for closing a container such that a container which has a sealed closure with a tab extending from it travels along a conveyor past a vacuum source which releasably secures the tab. As the container continues to move along the conveyor, the tab is pulled taut by the vacuum force. When the container reaches a predetermined position, it is raised off the conveyor with a yoke, the tab still being pulled taut by the vacuum force, and the top of the container, the sealed closure and the tab are pinched against a stop. At this position the tab is aligned, taut and clamped in place over the container opening so that a lid may be placed on the container.

6007466 - Cut-out integrated closure and forming method therefor - Owned by Tetra Laval Holdings & Finance, SA (Pully,CH)

A container and closure package includes container material stock formed of a severable material defining an opening therein defining a removable confetti portion and a dispensing member molded to the material stock. The dispensing member is superimposed over the opening to substantially overlie the confetti portion. The confetti portion can be ejected from the material stock when the dispensing member is molded to the container stock and can be integrated into the closure package to form a portion thereof. The dispensing member can be a spout and can include a cover or cap integral therewith. The cap is formed with the confetti portion forming a portion of the top wall thereof. Alternately, the closure package includes a spout, such as a threaded spout which is formed extending from the container stock. The confetti portion is formed integral with the spout to establish a seal therefor. The seal can be gas-impermeable.

5125211 - Reclosable stick gum package - Owned by Warner-Lambert Company (Morris Plains, NJ)

A reclosable package for holding items comprises a container having a front portion, top end portion and back portion. An adhesive front label is applied to the front portion of the container. A flexible adhesive flap is then applied which covers the label, top end, and back portions of the container. The label and front portion of the container has a contoured edge formed therein to define an opening edge. The flap includes a non-adhesive pull tab. Lifting the pull tab detaches the front portion along the contoured edge and also removes the top end to open the package. The back of the flap remains attached to the back of the package to form a hinged connection. The flap is resealable to the front portion of the package, to allow the package to be reclosed.

4705197 - Pour spout for containers - Owned by International Paper Company (Purchase, NY)

A pour spout for a paperboard container of either the flat top or gable top type. In one embodiment, a rectangular strip of a rigid plastics material, such as high density polyethylene, is provided with two upwardly liftable, coplanar hinged flaps, integrally formed with the strip. The flaps are aligned with respective vent and pour openings pre-cut in the container top. Upon lifting the flaps from the plane of the strip, an extruded barrier layer (typically a polymer-foil laminate) spanning the pre-cut openings is ruptured and is carried upwardly through the die-cut openings. One opening is a dispensing opening and the other a vent opening. In a second embodiment, a single integral, coplanar and also liftable flap on the rigid strip is employed to define a single pour opening. In a third embodiment, a single integral and copolanar flap on the rigid strip is covered by a flexible strip which is peeled back to expose the flap. The flap is then pushed downwardly to define a single pour opening.
