An apparatus (2) for the impregnation of metal castings including an impregnation chamber (11) having an open end; a movable assembly (2) comprising a cover (20) for closing the open end of the impregnation chamber, a casting carrier (21), carrier transport means (22) for raising and lowering the casting carrier relative to the cover, and carrier rotating means (23); and transport means (24) for raising and lowering the movable assembly relative to the open end of the impregnation chamber. The impregnation chamber is partially filled with liquid sealant (30). The apparatus is operated to position the carrier in the impregnation chamber above the liquid sealant therein and develop a vacuum in the chamber, submerge the carrier (and castings therein) in the sealant, and then raise the carrier above the sealant level and rotate carrier to spin-off excess liquid sealant; the movable assembly is thereafter raised to unload impregnated castings.
A pressure vessel for use in impregnating porous articles comprising a support member for the articles, slidable between an upper position for degassing the articles and a lower position for impregnating the articles, a release mechanism operable from outside the pressure vessel to permit the support member to descend from the upper position to the lower position under gravity, and damping means at least partially within the pressure vessel for controlling descent of the support member.
A multi-wafer load lock apparatus for use in wafer processing machines provides access to wafers in an internal cassette by orthogonal wafer transport devices. Upper and lower bell jars, which seal to a sealing plate, provide access to the cassette by outside and vacuum transport mechanisms, respectively. A right angle passthrough cassette allows orthogonal access. An improved vacuum feedthrough actuates both the upper bell jar and the internal cassette.
There is disclosed an article treating apparatus particularly apparatus for pressure-impregnating or vacuum impregnating porous articles such as metal castings. A holder for the articles or a metal basket containing them is disposed in an autoclave and can be rotated about a horizontal axis. It has a horizontal through-passageway so that articles to be treated can be simultaneously loaded at one end of the passageway and unloaded at the other end of the passageway by an indexing mechanism. The indexing mechanism has a plurality of pusher arms which can be moved laterally into the path of the articles and then moved horizontally to push the articles along rails into and out of the passageway. The holder is stopped at a predetermined rotary position in which a longitudinal slot is opposite the pusher arms so that unloading and loading may be effected simultaneously with a single movement of the indexing mechanism, a pusher arm passing completely through the slot. The lower part of the pressure vessel contains liquid impregnant and the holder can be rocked between an upper loading and unloading (and spin) position and a lower immersed position.
Thermally curable liquid sealants for impregnating the pores of cast metal articles and powdered metal articles including a combination of five polymerizable components within stated percentage ranges essential to providing sealants that, when cured, have low weight loss when tested for heat resistance, low weight gain when tested for chemical resistance upon submersion in water, brake fluid and antifreeze, and superior sealability characteristics.
