A magnetic disk drive has a drive motor mounted on a yoke which rotatable about a pivot in the drive. A bezel member mounted on the end of the yoke normally closes the opening the disk drive through which a cartridge is inserted. As this bezel member is moved out of the cartridge, the motor is moved out of the position in which it engages the disk and when the bezel member is closed, the motor moves into the engagement position. The motor is mounted on the yoke with a movable connection so that it is guided in a linear movement into engagement with the motor.
A device for aligning a disk contained in a cartridge with a motor and transducer of a disk drive is disclosed. A record disk contained within a rigid apertured cartridge is inserted into a disk drive for use with that disk drive. Insertion of the cartridge into the disk drive causes engagement of a reference surface of the cartridge with a reference surface of a spicule member contained within the disk drive. The spicule member carries the transducer and drive spindle of the disk drive. The spicule member also contains a clamping device which ensures proper engagement of the cartridge reference surface and the spicule reference surface. The result is the proper alignment between the disk contained in the rigid cartridge and the transducer and motor spindle carried by the spicule member.
A portable floppy disk auxiliary memory device contains a floppy disk drive device (7) and includes a portable body (1) having an insertion slot (1e) defined in a front face thereof for insertion of a floppy disk (8). An openable and closable door (2) is mounted on the body (1) for covering the front face thereof. If the door (2) is opened while the floppy disk drive device (7) is being operated, an alarm is issued.
A movable platform is mounted on opposing guide rails within a disk drive. A head actuator and spindle motor are mounted on the movable platform. The platform moves on the guide rails from a forward position to a rearward position upon insertion of a disk cartridge into the disk drive. As the platform moves toward the rearward position, the elevation of the platform changes in order to bring the spindle motor into engagement with the hub of the disk cartridge. A latch member is pivotally mounted on one of the guide rails for latching the platform in its forward position when the disk drive is not in use.

A magnetic disk drive for writing and reading data to and from a magnetic disk contained in a cartridge which is inserted through an opening in the disk drive includes a drive motor rotated on a yoke by a manually operated shaft having a handle on one end and a cam on the other end. A flat diaphragm switch is operated by a rotation stop on the shaft to indicate when the motor is in the loaded position of engagement with the disk.
