Method and apparatus for creating in a water pool a wave for surfing, the pool having a reservoir at one end open to the pool beneath the undisturbed water level of the pool, a fan connected to the reservoir for expelling air from it and drawing water from the pool into the reservoir to store water above the undisturbed water level of the pool, and a valve for selectively sealing the reservoir against the intrusion of air and rapidly ventilating the reservoir so that the stored water flows into the pool by gravity at a velocity near its theoretical limit.
Apparatus for generating waves in a swimming pool comprises a reservoir, independent of and separate from the pool, the reservoir containing a volume of water to be supplied to one or more inlets communicating into the lower regions of the swimming pool, and one or more flow paths through which the water from the reservoir is fed to the or each inlet, the or each flow path including a flow control valve therein and a volume of air downstream of the associated control valve for entrainment with the water flowing to the swimming pool such that, on entry of the water into the swimming pool, a wave having a turbulent, air-containing wake is formed.
A wave generator for generating waves in pools and the like for water sports, amusement and the like. The wave generator has a water inlet/outlet disposed and configured so that when acting as an inlet, it will draw water from the pool and not air from above the pool. The wave generator includes a sealable chamber coupled to the water inlet/outlet for temporary storage of a substantial quantity of water at elevations above the level of water in the pool. In operation the chamber is sealed and air is pumped therefrom by a suitable air pump, by an entrainment device or other equipment, substantially filling the chamber with water from the pool. To generate a wave, the upper part of the chaber is then vented to the atmosphere, allowing the water in the chamber to rush out through the inlet/outlet thereof, with the sudden rush of water generating the desired wave. Various embodiments are disclosed.
In a circulating pool main body which defines a swimming pool or tank, a bottom partition wall and front and rear curved partition walls are disposed and spaced apart by a suitable distance from the bottom and the front and rear curved portions of the main body, thereby defining a water circulation passage having an outlet opening to an upper upstream end of the swimming tank or pool and an inlet at the upper downstream end of the swimming tank or pool so that only the upper water layer of the body of water in the swimming tank or pool is forced to flow. Furthermore, one or more swingable blades or vanes are attached to the outlet of the water circulation passage so that the flow rate of the flowing upper water layer in the swimming tank or pool and its direction may be varied.
A wave forming generator which can repeatedly produce and launch singular waves across the surface of a body of water. The wave generator includes an air compressor interconnected with are a large air pressure holding tank. A hydraulic actuated valve is fitted onto the air pressure tank. Piping is then connected to the valve and ran out and down to join and connect to several main water tubes, cannons, pipes, or anything that can take the form of a long round elongated chamber. The elongated chambers are submerged just under the surface of the water, being anchored on an angle with the opened ends of the water chambers pointing upwardly. The opened ends of the elongated chambers face towards the artificial reef, shoreline, or the opposite end of the pool. To generate waves the control valve herein is opened and closed in short intervals and sequences which create sets of waves by allowing bursts of pressurized air from the air tank to be released into the water chambers forcing the water out the opened ends of the water chambers and into the body of water in a single forceful motion. The air then escapes out the opened ends of the water chambers following the water it just shot out therefore water rapidly refills back into the water chambers inbetween the actuation of the valve, preparing the water chambers for another wave formation sequence. This sequence is rapidly repeated to produce an ocean movement simulation.
Waves are generated on the surface of a body of water, at regular intervals, by a wave generator in which water is periodically lifted and allowed to fall in a water-lift chamber. Water enters and leaves the lift chamber through an underwater opening at its bottom. It is lifted by drawing a vacuum in the top of the lift chamber and dropped by releasing that vacuum. Air is periodically exhausted from the lift chamber to create a vacuum therein by an air blower through an air buffer having a series of interconnected air chambers, to minimize air-pressure fluctuations at the air blower intake. Vacuum in the lift chamber is periodically released by opening it to the atmosphere.
