The apparatus also includes means for making vacuum contact with each article and transferring the entire layer to the container where it is released and forms a tightly packed flat layer. The packing apparatus also includes means for folding back the top flaps of each empty container as it is conveyed to the loading station.

4936816 - Process and apparatus for opening the sealing flaps of a carton - Owned by Winkler & Dunnebier Maschinenfabrik und Eisengiesserei KG (Neuwied,DE)

A process and apparatus for opening the sealing flaps of a carton using drive elements for spreading or folding such sealing flaps open as required for packaging cartons having sealed bottoms. The boxes are inverted and lowered from a floating position with the bottom up and the sealing flaps hanging down. The flaps are placed on drive elements which move away from each other and in the flap opening direction. The box is then moved to a packaging area in the inverted position and lowered over the materials to be packaged.

5558614 - Tubular carton opening, presenting, and closing apparatus - Owned by Douglas Machine Limited Liability Company (Alexandria, MN)

Apparatus (200) for opening the closure flaps (22-25) of a carton (12), for presenting the carton (12) for loading, and for closing the closure flaps (22-25) is disclosed including a carrier (202) which initially receives the carton (12). The carrier (202) carries the carton (12) into a carriage (226), with the carton (12) sandwiched therebetween. The closure flaps (22-25) are opened by a device (242) including fingers (254-257) which are pivoted to an expanded position after their insertion through an opening (27) in the closure flaps (22-25). An elevator (212) raises the carton (12) in the carriage (226) while the carton (12) is still under compression, with suction cups (56,171-173) then being attached to the closure flaps (22-25). The carriage (226) can then be moved to a loading position and back where the closure flaps (22-25) of the loaded carton (12) are fan folded by a device (120). The elevator (212) can then be lowered where the closed carton (12) can be pushed therefrom.

5133169 - Apparatus for denesting plant flats and pots and depositing pots within flats - Owned by Tesch, Jr.; Sylvester M. (Prairie du Sac, WI)

In a continuous cycle the apparatus denests stacked plant pots and plant flats and fills the flats with the pots. Two piston mounted vacuum grippers employing arrays of suction cups are mounted to a frame. The flat gripper moves vertically to destack an array of plant flats or trays, and the pot gripper moves vertically to destack an array of plant pots. Both grippers are moveable between a retracted position, an unloading position, and a multiplicity of loading positions. A carriage is reciprocated on wheels between a first position beneath the flat gripper in its unloading position and a second position beneath the pot gripper in its unloading position. Stacks of nested plant flats and arrays of stacks of nested pot--both of which may be contained in their original shipping containers--are positioned beneath their respective grippers and aligned with the flat and pot grippers by means of adjustable alignment flanges. The pot gripper deposits an array of pots into a flat conveyed by the carriage which is then removed from the carriage by an ejecting mechanism. Pneumatic vibrators vibrate the grippers to prevent lifting of multiple units.
