A solid state image pick-up device includes a number of picture elements arranged in a matrix form. Each picture element being constituted by a MOS transistor and a photodiode, gates of the MOS transistors arranged in the vertical direction are connected to respective horizontal scanning lines which are connected to outputs of a horizontal shift register. Drains of the MOS transistors arranged in a horizontal direction are connected to respective vertical scanning lines both ends of which are connected to first and second signal read-out lines via first and second vertical selection switches, respectively. In the case of effecting a shutter speed control, the first and second vertical shift registers produce first and second vertical scanning pulses which are shifted by a given time period corresponding to a desired shutter open time to scan each picture element twice during each frame period. In the case of effecting a vertical contour enhancement, the shutter speed is fixed to a field period and vertically adjacent picture elements are scanned simultaneously and image signals simultaneously derived on the first and second signal read-out lines are supplied to a differential amplifier to derive a difference therebetween which is then added to the image signal on the first signal read-out line.
An image sensing apparatus of the invention has a photoelectric conversion device including a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements, arranged in a matrix pattern, and output terminals for simultaneously reading out signals of a plurality of lines. A control circuit simultaneously reads out the signals of the lines of the photoelectric conversion device. An edge signal generating circuit receives the signals of the lines, operating them and generating an edge-corrected signal. A switch switches the connection between the output terminals of the photoelectric conversion device and the input of the edge signal generating circuit, in correspondence with a change in the combination of the lines to be read out. The apparatus has a simple configuration and can perform signal processing such as edge correction.

A solid-state imaging system is provided with: a solid-state imaging device including a first scanning circuit for outputting, in a time series manner, signals of a plurality of picture element cells arranged in a two dimensional manner, and a second scanning circuit which performs its vertical scanning operation individually from the vertical scanning operation performed by the first scanning circuit. A sensitivity setting circuit compares a read out signal from the solid-state imaging device and a reference signal which corresponds to the level of a signal to be set. The sensitivity setting circuit also controls the operation start timing of the second scanning circuit so as to make the two signals substantially the same, whereby a unit sensitivity variation is enlarged corresponding to an improvement in the sensitivity to be set for the solid-state imaging device.
A solid state image-pickup device having an expanded dynamic range so that light reception from a subject having a high light intensity can be carried out without saturation of the light receiving elements of the image-pickup device.
