Abstract
A luminaire for use with HID lightbulbs includes a housing having four primary identical compound curve reflector sections oriented with two sections on each side of the lamp to cause major projections of the light emanating from the luminaire diagonally of the longitudinal axis of the lamp in a horizontal plane to create a square or rectangular distribution of light on the surface to be illuminated. Auxiliary reflector sections are placed at the ends of the light bulb and interconnect the main reflector sections to create an increase in the light projected along the lamp axis to compensate for the reduction in inherent lamp intensity along its axis.

4979086 - Luminaire having main and secondary reflector sections - Owned by Lowering Systems, Inc. (Chicago, IL)

A luminaire is disclosed for producing uniform rectangular or square patterns of light. The luminaire itself consists of eight, curved main reflector sections which are concentrically located about a bulb mounting location opposite the open side of the housing in which the luminaire is mounted. The main reflector sections are joined together at their edges, such that cross sections of the luminaire in planes parallel to the open side of the housing form octagons of decreasing size as the cross sections are taken at increasingly greater distances from the open side of the housing. The orientation of the main reflector sections is such that alternate points of the octagon are located in alignment with the center of the bulb placed in the center of the reflector sections and corners of the area to be illuminated. In these corners, flat secondary reflector sections, which extend part way into the luminaire, are attached to the main reflector sections to increase the concentration of light reflected from the light source in the center of the luminaire to the corners of the area to be illuminated.

6456431 - Stereomicroscope and dark field illumination apparatus - Owned by Nikon Corporation (Tokyo,JP)

A stereomicroscope has a dark field illumination apparatus capable of irradiating a subject with the light from a light source at a high efficiency by providing an optical system through which regularly reflected light beams are overlapped with each other by an annular reflective member with less ununiformity of the illumination.

5475361 - Strobe warning light - Owned by Wheelock, Inc. (Long Branch, NJ)

The reflector of a strobe warning light for mounting on a wall has reflective surfaces for enhancing the amount of light projected into a sector defined by a horizontal reference plane and a vertical reference plane that intersect at the lamp axis, the lamp being oriented horizontally. Two wing-like reflective surfaces reflect light into a zone of the sector from 10 degrees to 40 degrees from the horizontal reference plane. Two other wing-like reflectors that adjoin the first two reflect light generally parallel to the lamp axis in opposite directions to increase the light intensity as the light is viewed from the sides. The wing-like reflective surfaces are located in diagonally opposite quadrants with respect to the horizontal reference plane and a plane at the lamp centerline perpendicular to the lamp axis, thereby leaving openings in the remaining two quadrants. A concave reflective surface behind the vertical reference plane reflects light away from the wall. A lens over the lamp has a concave reflective surface that reflects light generally downwardly to enhance the light output in the 70 to 90 degree range from the horizontal reference plane.

5690422 - Sharp-cutoff luminaire having specular reflecting facets with fan-line geometry - Owned by Lighting Research & Development, Inc. (San Anselmo, CA)

A fan-line optical principle for use in the design of faceted specular reflectors for sharp-cutoff luminaires is disclosed, and a luminaire embodying this optical principle is described. The luminaire described comprises a high intensity arc discharge lamp, providing a primary light source with finite length and thickness, and a reflector including a plurality of specular reflecting facets with fan-line geometry. Each of these fan-line facets displays (in a given main beam direction) a primary light source image that is parallel and adjacent to the cutoff edge of that facet. The name of this invention relates to the fact that a perspective view toward the front of a sharp-cutoff luminaire embodying the invention shows that fan-line facets, and the images they produce, create a fan-like pattern. An important characteristic of the invention is that the images of the primary light source displayed by fan-line facets, at a given main beam angle, can show substantially all of the primary light source.

6338564 - Optical housing with vertical light source - Owned by Hubbell Incorporated (Orange, CT)

An optical housing is formed from a blank and a reflector mounting plate. The blank is scored to allow it to be folded into a box with a base and four walls. The box has a circular hole in the base and two wall tabs at the end of each of the four walls. The reflector mounting plate has wall tab slots that receive the wall tabs from the four walls and couples the two parts of the housing together. A set of reflectors is mounted to the reflector mounting plate in a predetermined reflector pattern. Another set of reflectors is mounted to the base of the box in a circular pattern. A third reflector fits into the circular hole in the base of the box and is mounted to the base. A light source is attached to the base of the box and extends vertically through a hole in the third reflector and partially beyond the first set of reflectors.
