Abstract
A sabot consists of a plurality of segments which define an air pocket for detaching the segments from a fin-stabilized subcaliber penetrator projectile. The air pocket is defined by a rear support region of the sabot. A front support region of the sabot includes a plurality of webs between each adjacent pair of which an air-through-streaming passage is defined. At least the web portion of each segment is made of synthetic material and such web portion has a curved part defining a fracture zone.

5289777 - Subcaliber kinetic energy projectile - Owned by Rheinmetall GmbH (Ratingen,DE)

A subcaliber kinetic energy projectile (1) including a penetrator (2) and a segmented sabot (3) which is provided with a front support (4) and with a second support (5) that is disposed at an axial distance behind the first support, with the second support (5) including a rotationally symmetrical air pocket (6) that faces the first support (4) and the first support (4) is provided with air passage openings (43, 44, 45).In the sabot, the relationship of L/D.gtoreq.1.2 exists between the length L of the penetrator tip (8) ahead of the first support (4) and the caliber D. The relationship x.gtoreq.0.45 * .iota. further applies between the distances x and .iota., with x being the distance between the trailing edge (10) of the sabot and the base surface (11) of the air pocket (6) in the second support (5) and .iota. being the distance between the trailing edge (10) of the sabot (3) and the leading edge (12) of the sabot at the surface of the penetrator (2). Finally, the first support (4) is composed of at least three laterally extending web-like components (40-42) whose shape and dimensions are such that they form and have the effect of three separate air pockets.

5103735 - Splined sabot - Owned by The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army (Washington, DC)

An improved segmented doubled ramp sabot for launching a sub-caliber projile, comprising a plurality of longitudinal ribs disposed on the forward and aft ramp sections of the sabot, and a plurality of longitudinal ribs disposed between an obturating band seat and a conical borerider. The combined cross sectional area of the double ramp segments, together with the combined cross sectional area of the ribs, are such that the sum of these areas is approximately equal to the cross sectional area of a double ramp sabot representative of prior art. As a result, axial stiffness is unaffected, and uniform shear traction forces between the sabot and projectile are maintained. In addition, the transverse bending stiffness of the sabot is improved, thereby reducing in-bore vibration and shot dispersion while allowing maximum energy transfer to the projectile. Use of a stiffer material for the ribs further improves transverse bending stiffness and performance.

4920889 - Fin stabilized, subcaliber propelling cage sobot projectile - Owned by Rheinmetall GmbH (Dusseldorf,DE)

A fin stabilized, subcaliber propelling cage sabot projectile including a projectile body having a high length to diameter ratio, i.e., an arrow projectile, and a discardable propelling cage sabot composed of a plurality of segments which coaxially surround a portion of the length of the projectile body and define an annular air pockect in the front surface of the sabot. To improve the process of releasing the propelling cage sabot segments from the projectile body once the projectile has left the gun barrel, a desired break location is provided in the propelling cage segments behind the frontal air pocket. This desired break location leads to separation of the outer front portion of the propelling cage sabot segments from the remainder of the sabot segments and thus, in the final effect, to an increase in hit accuracy.

5359938 - Ultra light weight sabot - Owned by Olin Corporation (St. Petersburg, FL)

An ultra light weight sabot for a subcaliber projectile comprises a sabot having three reduced mass segments each incorporating driving grooves at their inner diameter, an aft bourrelet, a central cavity beneath the aft bourrelet and an outwardly directed projection forward of the aft bourrelet to support the forward end of the projectile as it travels through a gun bore. The aft bourrelet has a balloon type obturator thereon which also fastens to the cartridge case. A bore extending through the obturator and the aft bourrelet into the annular cavity equalizes pressure between the case and the annular cavity to assist in sabot segment separation from the subcaliber projectile.

5189254 - Sealing band for an arrow-type projectile - Owned by Giat Industries (Versailles,FR)

The technical sector of the invention is that of sealing bands for arrow-type munitions. The sealing band (5) according to the invention is arranged in an annular groove (9) of a sabot (2) of an arrow-type projectile, and is characterized in that it comprises a substantially annular rear zone (8) on which, when the band (5) is positioned in the groove, comes into contact a seal (6) joined to the sabot, and in that it comprises means (12, 13, 17) ensuring its mechanical joining, due to similarity of shape, with the material forming the seal (6). Application to the field of large-caliber munitions.
