Abstract
A continuous rod of a product such as cigarette filter material is coated with a treating liquid by being passed axially through a cylindrical applicator zone comprising a permeable cylindrical wall, the cylindrical wall being concentrically enclosed within a reservoir and manifold zone connected to a source of liquid. The feed supply for the liquid additive can be pressurized and/or heated, so that application of the additive can be in either liquid or vapor form. The process and apparatus of this invention may be used alone or in conjunction with prior art homogeneous applicators and processes. When used to apply a plasticizer to a rod of continuous filament tow, e.g. for use in producing cigarette filters, annular regions of varying concentrations of the plasticizer are produced in the rod. A relatively dense region of plasticized fiber can be produced on the outside of the filter. Filter rods having wrapping paper uniformly adhered about the periphery of the rod can be produced. By installing the applicator apparatus between the transport jet and the garniture tongue of a typical cigarette filter rod making machine, the invention permits the production of satisfactory paper wrapped filter rods having unique depression on loading characteristics.

5788772 - Apparatus for coating the exterior of rod-like members - Owned by NGK Insulators, Ltd. (JP)

A coating apparatus for coating an outer peripheral surface of a rod-shaped workpiece with a covering material, comprising an elastic body having a covering material-impregnatable property and provided with an insertion hole through which the workpiece is to be passed, and a moving mechanism for moving the workpiece relative to the elastic body through the insertion hole, wherein the outer peripheral surface of the workpiece is coated with the covering material impregnated in the elastic body, when the workpiece is passed through the insertion hole of the elastic body by the moving mechanism.

5634926 - Surgical bone fixation apparatus

A bone fixation apparatus for anchoring a surgical member to bone for the fixation of bone or soft tissue to bone. The bone fixation apparatus includes a post device having a leg portion slidably insertable into a hole formed in bone. The leg portion is of sufficient length relative to the interior diameter of the hole to resist removal of the leg portion from the hole when forces substantially parallel to the outer surface of the bone are applied to the post device to anchor the surgical member to bone. In one aspect of the invention, the surgical member is a plate section of an elongated sheet of surgical plate material which may be divided into a plurality of plate sections each having an arbitrary shape.

6350399 - Method of forming a treated fiber and a treated fiber formed therefrom - Owned by Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc. (Neenah, WI)

The present disclosure is directed to a method of forming a treated fiber. A molten polymer is delivered to a fiber spinning assembly adapted to form and distribute polymer streams. At least one treatment is applied in a liquid state to at least one region on the surface of at least one molten polymer stream within the fiber spinning assembly. A substantial portion of the treatment remains on the surface of the resulting fiber within the treated region. One or more regions on the surface of the molten polymer may be treated with one or multiple treatments. The degree of coverage may vary from little coverage to complete coverage of the fiber surface. The treated regions may be in contact with one another or may be separate and distinct. A nonwoven web may be produced with selectively treated fiber regions by designing one or more fiber spinning assemblies to treat selected fibers or to apply multiple treatments. The regions of the nonwoven web may vary in treatment type, amount, or degree of coverage.
