A patient is restrained in a wheelchair or hospital bed by a jacket disposed around the upper torso of the patient so that it makes a snug fit around the shoulders and upper torso of the patient. The jacket includes sleeves for extending along the arms of the patient. Adjustable ties on both sides of the midriff region of the jacket are tied to adjust the size of the jacket midriff region to fit the size of the patient and for retaining the adjusted size of the jacket. Fasteners in the form of restraining straps extend away from opposite sides of the jacket for attachment to a fixture such as the understructure of the hospital bed or wheelchair or wheelchair. In one embodiment, a zipper fastener opens and closes the rear of the jacket, and the zipper is offset from the rear center of the jacket so that it does not apply pressure to the spinal column of the patient when the jacket is worn. The rear of the jacket also can include restraining means for securing the upper rear portion of the jacket to the hospital bed or wheelchair. The sleeved jacket prevents the patient from raising up or sliding down in the bed or wheelchair to prevent the patient from choking himself, and it prevents the patient from pulling the jacket over his head to free himself.

A jumpsuit style support and restraint garment designed to safely and comfortably confine a person to a chair or wheelchair while providing proper body alignment and allowing full range of motion of arms and legs. A human body fitting cloth panel with front and shoulder covering has a rib-knit V-neck in the top. A bottom fold having rib-knit lined leg holes frontwardly horizontally aligned is a seat portion and a continuation of the panel which can be passed under the back rest of a wheelchair. The panel continues as a back member which extends up the outside backrest of the wheelchair and is zipper-fastened to the shoulder covering behind the patient's neck. A special locking ring prevents the patient from easily unzipping the fasteners. Movement of the support materials is restricted by handle apertures which fit the wheelchair handles. Full pants and shorts styles are available in the jumpsuit design.
A disposable restraint jacket having a pair of laterally spaced, releasably secured flaps, formed in the front of the jacket, that grant ready access to the subclavian area. The jacket is color coded as to size, is marked with indicia to indicate its front and back parts, and its neck opening prevents choking of the patient. The flaps and other confronting parts of the jacket are releasably secured by a combination of locking devices of the hook and loop type. Additional embodiments add zippers and flaps on the back of the jacket.
A restraint garment has a front body portion, permanently connected to a rear body portion, both extending from the neck of the patient down to the mid-height of the patient's thighs. The rear body portion has two detachable pieces connected to each other by a zip fastener. The garment also has first and second rear shoulder portions extending from the shoulder edges of the front body portion down to the bottom of the shoulder blades in the back of the patient, which are detachably connected to each other by another zip fastener. The bottom parts of the front and rear portions are detachably connected to each other by a third zip fastener extending continuously form one thigh to the other, thereby making it possible to completely open the garment at the patient's fork. Each of the zip fasteners are preferably locked either with a key-operated lock or with a buckle made of a snap fastener and a sliding sleeve. This restraint garment makes it difficult not to say impossible for a patient to undress. It is very difficult to remove and prevent the patient from having access to the covered part of his or her body. Moreover, this garment is easy to fit on a patient and gives easy access for the nursing staff to the diaper that the patient may wear and permits the patient to be secured to his or her bed or chair.
A patient restraint apparatus includes a restraint strap unit which includes a pair of restraint strap ends, a pair of intermediate restraint strap portions connected to the pair of restraint strap ends, a central restraint strap portion connected between the pair of restraint strap portions, and a pair of strap connectors connected to the pair of restraint strap ends. A pair of tie up strap units are connected to the pair of strap connectors. The pair of strap connectors includes a pair of first buckle members. Each of the tie up strap units includes a second buckle member for connection to a respective first buckle member. Each of the tie up strap units includes a tie strap for tying onto the bed frame. With another embodiment of the invention, the tie strap includes a pair of strap portions that pass through a strap reception channel in one of the second buckle members. The restraint strap ends and portions of the restraint strap portions are in the form of loops. The loops are attached to other portions of the restraint strap portions by sewn stitches.
An upper torso restraining device is disclosed for maintaining an individual in a seated position in a chair or similar by providing attachment and support of the upper torso. An external upper body garment with appearance similar to ordinary clothing is provided with side slits. An interior vest having straps extending from front crossover and crossunder portions is attached to the upper body garment along the upper edges of the interior vest. Straps from the crossunder portion pass through one side of the interior vest through interior slits and straps from the crossover portion pass through external loops located on the opposing side of the interior vest. The straps then pass through the side slits, and may be secured together behind an individual wearing the interior vest and upper body garment.
