A material for use as cat litter comprising a composition of paper machine sludge combined in the presence of water with sodium bicarbonate and a hydraulic cement, dried and crushed to form coarse particles or extruded and chopped up to form pellets. Desirably, the composition includes an anti-static material and coloring.
A cat litter is provided which is formed from a selective quantity of peat so that the peat absorbs urine such that the release of ammonia is substantially inhibited. A method of producing a cat litter also is provided.
A particulate absorbent material is constituted by discrete clay granules and paper granules, and usually exhibits a bulk density of about 10 lbs/ft.sup.3 to about 30 lbs/ft.sup.3. The weight ratio of paper granules-to-clay granules is about 0.09 to about 9. The particle size distribution for the clay granules is relatively wider than for the paper granules.
A paper based particulate absorbent material and method of manufacture using shredded paper along with water and a binder mixture. In the first step of the process the waste paper is subjected to a size reduction treatment. In the second step, the paper is mixed with water and optionally a binder. The material exits the mixing apparatus which can be fully dried to produce a particulate absorbent material. This material can be used for litter material, box packing material, caulking filler and floor sweep. The product can be made to be similar in appearance to commercially available litter materials but is lighter, dust-free, biodegradable and extremely absorbent. The packing material can be made to bend but not crease. Further, the product is extremely economical since it is made out of waste paper.
Methods are provided for preparing absorbent material, comprising providing non-broken down and uncut recycled fiber sludge having a moisture content of greater than about 40%; pelletizing said recycled fiber sludge to form wet pellets; and drying said wet pellets. The absorbent material is particularly useful as an industrial-grade waste liquid absorbent and/or an animal litter.
A fiber-hydratable cement composition comprising a uniform dispersion of from 0.0001 to 10 volume percent interground fiber in hydratable cement powder is prepared by introducing fiber precursors and cement clinker to a grinding mill and grinding the mixture until the clinker has been reduced to a fine powder. The fiber can be steel, alkaline resistant glass, ceramic, carbon or organic polymer, and preferably are steel, polyolefin or mixtures thereof.
