Olefin polymerization catalyst components having improved activity and morphological properties are disclosed and claimed. In particular, the components are prepared by reacting a carbonized magnesium alkoxide or aryloxide component with a halogenated tetravalent titanium component, a halohydrocarbon component and an electron donor.
A spray-dried composition comprising the reaction product of a magnesium halide, a solvent, an electron donor compound, and a transition metal compound and an inert filler comprising substantially spherical particles having an average particle size ranging from about 1 .mu.m to about 12 .mu.m, and a polymerization process using the same.
An improved high activity olefin polymerization catalyst catalyzes the production of polymeric lower .alpha.-olefin having good properties and a relatively narrow particle size distribution. The catalyst is produced from an organoaluminum cocatalyst, a selectivity control agent and a novel olefin polymerization procatalyst which is prepared by contacting a tetravelent titanium halide, a halohydrocarbon, an electron donor and the solid procatalyst precursor obtained by heating an adduct of a carbonated magnesium ethoxide and a phenolic compound of enhanced acidity.

A process is provided for preparing a shape-shifted catalyst component comprising (1) contacting a dihydrocarbyloxide magnesium compound with carbon dioxide in the presence of a slurrying agent to form a slurry of a carboxylated dihydrocarbyloxide magnesium compound; (2) adding a filler to the slurry either before or after the carboxylation of step (1); (3) spray drying the slurry of step (2) to evaporate the slurrying agent and to produce solid particles of the carboxylated dihydrocarbyloxide magnesium compound incorporating the filler; and, optionally, (4) heating the solid particles to remove carbon dioxide to produce a shape-shifted dihydrocarbyloxide magnesium compound component. A catalyst system using the component and a polymerization process employing the catalyst system are also provided.
