Abstract
In an orthopedic pillow in accordance with the present invention comprises a unitary body of foam or other resilient material with a deep generally hemispherical depression or aperture. The aperture receives the back of a user's head in such a manner that a portion of the weight of the head is supported directly by a mattress or the like beneath the pillow while the rest of the weight of the user's head is supported by the surrounding portion of the pillow. This design allows the user's head to rest generally on the same horizontal surface on which the remainder of the user's body rests. As a result, the head can shift backwardly into an ideal postural position in relation to the long axis of the user's body. In addition to holding the head, the pillow cushions the head by distributing its weight over a wide area. Also, the aperture is eccentrically positioned in the body to provide different distances between the edge of the body and the aperture. By orienting the pillow appropriately, it can be positioned to fit users with different neck lengths. Also, in one form of the invention, the size of the aperture is adjustable to fit various sized heads.

5018231 - Neck guard pillow

A contoured pillow is provided which is designed to accommodate a person sleeping in the supine position or in a side position. The pillow includes a curved ridge along one edge of the pillow to support the neck. The ridge ends in an elliptical depression within the center of the pillow to support the back of a person's head. The elliptical depression allows a person's head a freedom of movement of 45.degree. from either side of its normal vertical position and allows bending of the neck to a certain degree. Along the sides of the depression the pillow is of a greater dimension to support the head when resting on the side of the head. The pillow further includes longitudinal grooves within the side regions of the pillow to prevent a person's ear from being overly compressed against the pillow when resting on one's side. The pillow is of a conventional size and shape and can be used with standard pillow cases, standard sized beds, etc.

6029295 - Annular pillow with metal mesh material cover

A pillow serving as a cervical support has a metal mesh material cover encasing a resilient padding material. The pillow has an annular shape, thus forming a ring-shaped body. The size of the body should be different, and may be varied, depending upon the age and size of the person using it. For example, a child will benefit from a pillow having a smaller size than would a full-sized adult. An object of the present invention is to provide a proper sleeping posture because of the ring shape, which tends to discourage sleeping in a face-down position.

5471690 - Travel pillow

A travel pillow is provided in the form of a torus which is inflated and which has an integral bottom backing member adapted to coact with the seat back of a chair in a plane, train, bus, or automobile in which sleep is promoted regardless of movement of the individual's head during sleep periods because the pillow permits both rotation of the head within the torus during sleep and also movement of the pillow laterally and vertically as it slips against the seat back during natural sleep movements.

5743271 - Cervical reclination cushion - Owned by Instituto Vesalio S.L. (Barcelona,ES)

A cervical reclination cushion including a one-piece body of rectangular prismatic structure, having a central depression, in the form of an enlarged softened imprint of the occipito-cervical region. On each side the central depression surfaces are provided for supporting a person's head when the person is lying on his side. The cushion is applicable to patient's suffering from disorders of the backbone, or persons who may only rest when lying down with an exact support, in the natural physiological position of the cervical column.

5588168 - Contoured symmetrical differential-elasticity neck pillow

This invention relates to a contoured neck pillow. The invention consists of a central pad of polyurethane foam having a compression of about seven pounds, which is relatively softer and more elastic than a surrounding ring of polyurethane foam having a compression of about fifteen to twenty pounds. Two convoluted foam sections enclose the ring and pad, and are in turn encased within a protective cover.
